The Ukrainian Cup (Ukrainian: Кубок України) is a knockout cup competition in Ukrainian football, run by the Football Federation of Ukraine. The winner of the competition is awarded a qualification to the UEFA Cup (prior to 2000 to the UEFA Cup Winner's Cup). From 2007/08 season and until 2011/12 season inclusively, this tournament's official name is DATAGROUP − Football Ukraine Cup. [edit] Format The format of this competition fluctuates annually. Mainly the competition is limited to the professional level clubs. Currently the Premier division clubs are granted a bye all the way to the 1/16 of the final. From the 1/16 final which considers to be officially the first round of competition, it is being administrated by the Premier League. Prior to that, the qualification rounds are under the administration of PFL Ukraine and usually consist of two to four. At one point and prior to the reorganization in 2008 for couple of years this competition included a sub competition which was called as the Ukrainian Second League Cup. During that time only the clubs of the Ukraine Premier League and Ukrainian First League along with the finalists of the Ukrainian Second League Cup competed in this Cup competition. In the 90's amateur clubs, usually Oblast Cup Champions were allowed to compete on the volunteer bases. Since the introduction of the Ukrainian Second League Cup participation of the amateur clubs became restricted. From 2007 the winner of the Ukrainian Amateur Cup was allowed to compete and enter the qualification rounds along with the other members of the PFL Ukraine. On May 27, 2009 the CR PFL reinstated the participation of amateur clubs, particularly the winners of the Ukrainian regional cup competitions, to increase the popularity and add the intrigue to the Ukrainian Cup qualification rounds[1]. [edit] History The first Cup competition brought as much surprises as the championship of 1992. The main contender, Dynamo Kyiv, settled in a draw in its first game at home against, what used to be an amateur club in Soviet times, Skala Stryi and in the next round, quarterfinals, was defeated by the FC Torpedo Zaporizhia. Nevertheless, since then Dynamo Kyiv continues to dominate not only in the amount of the gained championship titles, but in amount of the Cups won as of today.
