The 1st Round had some sensational outcomes : Dinamo Buçuresti from Romania were able to beat Shakthar Donetsk from Ukraine in both matches, Gençerlbiriligi from Ankara, Turkey, eliminated Blackburn Rovers FC from England, Dinamo Buçuresti's all-time rivals Steaua eliminated Blackburn's country-club Southampton FC, whilst Germany already lost three teams, none of them was expected to drop out : Hamburger SV lost against Ukrainian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on aggregate, Kaiserslautern lost both matches against FK Teplice from the Czech Republic, and Hertha failed to score against Polish side Groclin Grodzisk, and lost 0:1 on aggregate. But : also Italian side Udinese Calcio was sensationally eliminated by the Austrian's from FC Salzburg, whilst Ferencvarosi TC from Hungary advanced a bit surprising against FC Kobenhavn from Denmark, despite needing a penalty shoot-out to do it.

Germany was already eliminated from the UEFA Cup, because the two remaining German clubs, Dortmund and Schalke, unexpectedely dropped out against Sochaux from France and Bröndby from Denmark respectively, but there were some more unexpected outcomes in terms of procceding or dropping out of the competition : Manchester City FC lost on away goals to Poland's Groclin Grodzisk, SK Slavia Praha from the Czech Republic lost with the same reason against PFC Levski Sofia from Bulgaria, Gaziantepspor from Turkey overan French side RC Lens, winning both games. That was not the end yet, however, because Valerenga IF from Norway remained in competition without having won a single game after two 0:0 draws with Poland's champion Wisla Krakow and a win in the penalty shoot-out, Gençlerbirligi stunned Europe in eliminating Sporting CP Lisbon from Portugal with a 3:0 win at Estadio José Alvalade in Portugal, and Feyenoord, the Dutch team which had won the UEFA Cup in 2002, lost 1:3 on aggregate against FK Teplice from the Czech Republic.
