The UCI World Ranking tables are a system of ranking elite road bicycle racers based upon the results in a series of races over a twelve month period, which started in 2009.
[edit] BackgroundUntil the end of 2004, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) maintained both the UCI Road World Rankings, which awarded results for all its sanctioned races, and the UCI Road World Cup, which was awarded on the basis of performance in ten selected one day events. Both were replaced from the 2005 season by the UCI ProTour and UCI Continental Circuits. However, disputes between the UCI and ASO, the organisers of the Tour de France and other classics, and eventually with the organisers of the Tours of Italy and Spain, meant that by 2008 the ProTour was devalued as a ranking method, as only one of the Monument events, and three other classics, remained under the auspices of the UCI. [edit] Ranking eventsThe UCI World Calendar,[1] consisting of the 16 UCI ProTour events, the three Grand Tours, five more of the classics (including the other four monuments), and two early season stage races, lists the 26 races in which points can be gained for the World Rankings. In addition to individual rankings, tables are produced for teams and nations, based on the top five individuals in the standings representing the team or country. All races on the World Calendar except the Tour Down Under were part of the 2007 UCI ProTour, the last ProTour season before its devaluation: the Paris-Tours, along with three discontinued races ( the Eindhoven Team Time Trial, Züri-Metzgete and Deutschland Tour) were part of the 2007 ProTour, but are not in the present World Ranking Calendar. Two new Canadian races, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, were added to the calendar for 2010.
