A Type V hypersensitivity reaction occurs when IgG class antibodies directed towards cell surface antigens have a stimulating effect on their target. Grave's disease is an example of this type of hypersensitivity reaction. This disease is also considered as type II hypersensitivity reaction. Type II hypersensitivity reaction can be divided into three types according to the mechanism, viz Opsonization and Complement- and Fc Receptor- mediated phagocytosis, Complement- and Fc receptor- mediated inflammation, and Antibody- mediated cellular dysfunction. Grave's disease is said to fall under the third category by most. The difference is that, instead of dysfunction, there is antibody mediated stimulation of cell function. So, some have isolated this special type and have named it type V hypersensitivity reaction. [edit] See Also
