The Turkish Air Force Academy (Turkish: Hava Harp Okulu) was founded in 1951, replacing the Army Flight School and with the mandate to train the officers of the Turkish Air Force. Today it is a four- year institution of higher learning, providing an engineering education to Air Force cadets from Turkey as well as a number of other countries, and preparing them for careers in their respective Air Forces. TuAF Academy is recognized by the Higher Education Council of Turkey, as a university accredited to grant engineering degrees.
[edit] OverviewIn 2001 TuAF Academy started a graduate school called Aeronautics and Space Technologies Institute (ASTlN). ASTlN offered the Master of Science degree in the same departments that exist for undergraduate education at the Academy. These are the departments or industrial, aeronautical, electronics and computer engineering. Soon after ASTlN admitted its first students in September 2001, a decision was made to start a space studies program. The decisian was followed by a study and preparation period for the development and formulation of the program, as the area of space studies had no precedent in undergraduate education or the rest of the Academy. It is a member of the European Air Force Academies (EUAFA). [edit] Subjects
[edit] UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATIONThe four year Academic education is the most extensive part of the Officer Development System that is being conducted in Turkish Air Force. This educational development process started with the establishment of Turkish Air Force Academy in Eskişehir in 1951. The education and training period of Turkish Air Force Academy carried on as two-year academic study till 1969, than the three year of academic study took place between the years of 1969 and 1974. There has been a four year academic education since 1974. For the equivalence of the education given in Air Force Academy with the other universities, there had been an improvement study held by the order of Turkish General Staff for the War Academies. Then, having considered the needs of Turkish Air Force, there has been a bachelor’s degree education on Aviation, Electronics, Computer and Industrial Engineering programs which began to be applied since 1991-1992 Academic Term. In 1994-1995, academic term departments were reorganized as of Aeronautical, Electronics, Computer and Industrial Engineering. The bachelor’s degree education that is already being carried on legalized with the War Academies’ Law numbered 4566 on 17th May 2000, since then the officers graduated from Turkish Air Force Academy as pilot candidates started to be given the education of BS in Engineering. Dean of Academics was changed into Deanship after the War Academies’ Law took effect. The duties of Turkish Air Force Academy Deanship are; to train active duty officers in the name of Turkish Air Force, to plan, to perform, to follow, to check, to develop, to coordinate, to supply education and training academically. And also to provide a productive and effective management of the organization under its command according to determined goals and to support the Institute of Aeronautics and Space Technologies by the means of education and training. The BS which is going to be given in Turkish Air Force Academy is formatted according to the goals of the Turkish Air Force Academy and also in the standards that is programmed in the field of engineering by the Council of Higher Education (CHE). The education program of BS has been organized considering the hours of lessons, value of credits, and the contents of the lessons according to the standards of equivalences of national or international institutions. The resultant that is called credit includes theoretical, laboratory and practical lessons. In these lessons one credit is for weekly every theoretical lessons and also 0,5 credit for practical and laboratory lessons. Military training lessons, physical education lessons and leadership and commandership training and practices are called coefficient lessons. The training and education year consists of two terms in the Turkish Air Force Academy. Each term includes 15 or 16 weeks for academic training and also final term examinations. The lessons are for each term. There is at least one midterm or final exam for each lesson in a term. Fixed based and fixed letter spaced marking system is being applied in order to evaluate the cadets. Central examination system is performed. Because there is a composite examination system, all classes have the exams at the same time. The academic year starts at the last day of September or the first Monday of October and there are five lesson days in a week in the Turkish Air Force Academy. The cadets are given at least two weeks off in an academic year. In summer Encampment and Military training period, all the activities of military training, orientation training, preparation for the next year and the schedule for cadet passes are planned and executed in “Annual Activity Schedule” .Military training period consists of at least two weeks and it never exceeds eight weeks. Lessons are planned and applied to improve cadets’ reading and research habits. Applications regarding reading, observation, research techniques from different sources are also taught to cadets. In order to create more efficient and effective educational environments, custom modified educational methods are applied. These methods are applied in laboratories and special classes. Vital feed back from various departments of Turkish Air Force is used to improve the education system. Future needs are taken into consideration with the developments in science and technology together with close cooperation with similar inland and international institutions. As outlined above, Air Force Academy continues to educate and train cadets in the departments of Aeronautical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Applied Sciences, Military and Social Sciences, and Foreign Languages in the most contemporary academic knowledge and skills with theoretical and practical lessons. [edit] FLIGHT TRAININGDuring Air Force Academy education period, Air Force Academy cadets receive Applied Flight Training besides academic and military lectures. With the help of this training, cadets improve their knowledge and skills about aviation. Flight Training is executed under the supervision of 5th Squadron Command, which functions under the planning and execution of Wing Command and with experienced teaching pilots, who have served in different flight units of Air Force for many years. While cadets are learning basic flight knowledge in the content of the flight training, they improve their knowledhe in real flying conditions by T-41D planes which are in the squadron and they are increasing their skill levels intended for piloting training. Cadets accomplish their flight trainings as it is mentioned below: 1st year 2 sorties, 2nd year 2 sorties, 3rd year 3 sorties, 4th year 4 sorties. All grades are first subjected to normal and emergency procedures exam. After succeeding in these exams they can start their flight trainings. In parallel to flight trainings, cadets are given lessons within fleet's land courses; meteorology, flight physiology, tower conversations, using the GPS, general flight planning, cartography and besides presentations and briefs about Turkish Air Force Flight Corporations. Air Force Academy cadets are given glider courses by the teachers from THK as well as the T-41D courses. At the end of this glider training, successful cadets are given A Class glider certificate and badge. [edit] TURKISH AIR FORCE MUSEUM COMMAND[edit] HistoryThe Turkish Air Force was founded on June 1, 1911 by the order of Mahmut Şevket Pasha, Minister of Defense of the Ottoman Empire, under the name of “Aviation Commission” headed by Lieutenant Colonel Süreyya İLMEN. Cavalier Captain Fesa EVRENSEV and Lieutenant Yusuf KENAN were sent to Bleriot Flight School on July 1911. After completing their training in February 1912, they returned to Turkey and became the first pilots of the Turkish Army. One-seat and two-seat Deperdussins bought from France in 1912 were the first Turkish aircraft. The first steps of Turkish Aviation were taken by constructing hangars, runways and other infrastructure facilities under the name of Yeşilköy Flight School in Yeşilköy, İstanbul. In 1918, Yeşilköy Airplane Station turned into an aviation training center for the Ottoman Air Force. After 1912, special stores were built to keep aircraft which were not in use any more and which were captured. This initiative sparked the idea of establishing an aviation museum. After a short period of time, the Air Force Inspectorship took a decision of founding an air museum and also made wreckage of enemy aircraft collected. These aircraft which had been preserved in hangars and stores were damaged while being transported to Kartal-Maltepe and casulties occurred during the Independence War impeded the establishment of the Air Museum. [edit] Applying For TUAFAThe standards are shown below in order to join Turkish Air Force Academy: For military High School graduates, the selection stages are:
For Public High School Graduates, in addition
In case of passing the tests completely, selection is completed. For the further information link title [edit] TuAFA'S RESOURCESTuAFA chooses the cadets from two sources. First group comes from military high school in Turkey (Işıklar, Maltepe, Kuleli, Deniz Military High Schools.) These students take their high school education in these schools for four years. Second group comes from civilian schools. These students from Math\Science classes attend to SSE exam. The students who can get enough points can enroll Turkish Air Force Academy. All these groups get same selection stages for taking education in Turkish Air Force Academy. [edit] TURKISH AIR FORCE ACADEMYTurkish Air Force Academy is a military university which is affiliated to TUAF and GSC. TUAFA has different education and training places called campus. As being different from other universities, TUAFA gives basic training and leadership education to cadets. Furthermore TUAFA, demands on giving a sport training to cadets for their future and their job. Firstly, TUAFA was gotten its own presented academy, in 1967. However, before it in 1912, 1951, 1954, TUAFA had had different place to educate. Some of in 1911, TUAF was obtaining their pilot candidates from army academy. After then our commanders decided to construct a new building in Yesilyurt for the future of TUAF. At first there was an education limit which is 2 years but in 1969, it was extended to 3 years. Lastly it was extended to 4 years. Today, in Yesilyut campus there are post graduate education which is being given in HUTEN, the education of combat pilot candidates and the activities of Aviation Museum and support group. plus to whole, there is an airfield for T-41 flights. In Air Force Academy, academic education and physical training is divided to three main terms. On this topic, cadets are taking so many different trainings in Yalova camp. Furthermore, cadets are also must succeed in all their academic courses to pass their next grade. Secondly, the core values of Turkish Air Force is being learned and lived to cadets in TUAFA. Thus, commanders are reaching their purpose to prepare new, perfect and honest officers in this service. Thirdly, in academic training, there are four engineering department at DEAN.The academic improving of cadets is being enhanced in different areas. After a few years, the cadets have also the chance of doctorates on this engineering parts in ASTIN. Consequently, TUAFA is fulfilling its goal in developing career officers through the education and training program. [edit] Importance Of Sport In Turkish Air Force AcademyAll cadets who have taken education from Turkish Air Force Academy educated for being really good pilots. One important about flight is that a pilot has to have a strong body for facing 9.0 and higher G powers in the air. So from the root, students get a hard sport programme for improvement. Especially fainting in the air causes a lot of problem for Turkish Air Force. It causes the lost of pilot and money and plane. So sports hold a big place in education of students in Turkish Air Force Academy. (İhsan BAĞBAŞI) [edit] References[edit] External linksCoordinates: 40°58′05″N 28°50′35″E / 40.96806°N 28.84306°E
