Travel writing is a style of writing that describes a place, sometimes using humorous and opinionated views, personal to the writer, or serious and greatly descriptive prose. Travel writing is often associated with tourism, and includes works of an ephemeral nature such as guide books and reviews, with the intent being to educate the reader about the destination, provide helpful advice for those visiting the destination, and inspire readers to travel to the destination. Travel writing has also been produced by other types of travelers, such as military officers, missionaries, explorers, scientists, pilgrims, and immigrants. Travel writing is often used to show an individual interpretation and perspective on a place, although frequently written in a Third Person point of view. Spoken word[dubious ] is used throughout travel writing due to its more natural, welcoming and explanatory manner.[dubious ] Travel writing is also explored in a number of television shows, such as Word Travels, following South African travel writer Robin Esrock and Canadian travel writer Julia Dimon.[1] The show is broadcast on OLN in Canada, and National Geographic Adventure Worldwide. Other Travel Shows include TravelScope with Joseph Rosendo[2] and Burt Wolf: Travels and Traditions[3] featuring Burt Wolf, both of which air on PBS. Travel writing which is valued as literature may be referred to as travel literature. Travel Literature consists primarily of essays or narratives, whether short or long, that focuses on the author's experiences that take place at a particular destination, rather than focusing the destination itself.
