Todd Gloria is a Democratic elected official from San Diego, California. He represents San Diego's third city council district.
[edit] CareerPrior to being elected to the city council, Gloria served as District Director to U.S. Congresswoman Susan Davis. He also worked for the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency and served as a San Diego Housing Commissioner from 2005 until 2008. Gloria serves as the Chair of the City Council's Land Use and Housing Committee. He also serves on the Public Safety & Neighborhood Services, Budget & Finance, and Rules Committees. Gloria represents San Diego on the Metropolitan Transit Service Board, the San Diego Workforce Partnership Policy Board, and the SANDAG Transportation, Public Safety, and Regional Planning Committees. [edit] EducationGloria is an alumnus of the University of San Diego. He majored in history and political science. While at student at USD, Gloria was named a 1999 Harry S. Truman Scholar in recognition of his academic excellence and commitment to a career in public service. [edit] ActivismBeing a member of the LGBT community, Gloria has done activist work on behalf of the community. He is a past chairman of the San Diego LGBT Community Center and as a student at USD was active in the effort to add "sexual orientation" to the campus nondiscrimination policy. Gloria is also known for his work on affordable housing issues. He served as a San Diego Housing Commissioner prior to his election to the city council. During his service on the Commission, over 2,000 units of affordable housing were created in San Diego. A resident of City Heights, Gloria was active in combating crime in his own neighborhood. He was a member of the City's Prostitution Impact Panel where he partnered with the City Attorney's office, local police, and advocacy groups to deter prostitution in the Mid-City section of San Diego. [edit] 2008 electionGloria was the top vote getter in the June 2008 primary when he bested five other candidates. He defeated Stephen Whitburn, a journalist and community activist, in the November 2008 general election with 54.33% of the vote. He succeeded Toni Atkins when he was sworn in to represent Council District 3 on December 8, 2008. [edit] PersonalGloria is a native San Diegan and third generation resident of District 3. He is an enrolled member of the Tlight-Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Gloria lives in the Cherokee Point neighborhood of the City Heights community of San Diego. [edit] References
