This is a timeline of punk rock, from its beginnings in the late 1960s to the present time.
- Events
- The Ramones make their first non-US appearance supporting the Flamin' Groovies at The Roundhouse, London, July 4, often pointed to as a galvanizing event for the UK punk scene.
- Stiff Records is created in London by entrepreneurs Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera), signing almost exclusively punk and punk-inspired musicians.
- Malcolm McLaren organizes a two day punk festival on Sunday, September 20 and Monday, September 21 at the 100 Club on Oxford Street in London. The Sunday performers were: Subway Sect, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols. The Monday line-up consisted of the Stinky Toys, Chris Spedding and the Vibrators, The Damned, and the Buzzcocks.
- Sniffin' Glue, Mark Perry's punk fanzine is first published, shortly after The Ramones' Roundhouse appearance. Perry would soon form the band Alternative TV.
- The Damned, The Saints and the Sex Pistols release their first singles: "New Rose", "(I'm) Stranded" and "Anarchy in the U.K." respectively.
- The Sex Pistols, The Damned, and The Clash begin the Anarchy Tour in November. Most of the previously booked gigs refuse to let the bands play however.
- On December 1 the Sex Pistols and several members of the Bromley Contingent (including Siouxsie & the Banshees singer Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steve Severin) appear live on ITV to be interviewed by television host Bill Grundy. The band, unleashes a torrent of curse words when Grundy attempts (unsuccessfully) to hit on Sioux. The following day the Daily Mirror runs the now infamous headline - "THE FILTH AND THE FURY!".
- Events
- On January 1, Andrew Czezowski opens The Roxy in London solely as a venue for punk acts. The Clash perform on opening night.
- Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock is fired from the Sex Pistols and is replaced with Sid Vicious. Matlock forms The Rich Kids.
- In February Howard Devoto left Buzzcocks. Guitarist Pete Shelley became the vocalist.
- The Clash begin their White Riot tour on March 1st in Guilford. They are supported by The Jam, Buzzcocks, The Slits and Subway Sect. The Jam leave the tour on March 22 after a dispute.
- The Stranglers embark on a three month nationwide tour in May They are supported by the band London.
- The Sex Pistols' single "God Save the Queen" is released on May 27 and reaches number two on the British charts. It is banned by BBC Radio 1 and the title is left blank in the chart listings.
- In June, the Sex Pistols rent a boat to take them down the Thames during Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee anniversary celebration. The police force the boat to dock and several Pistols fans are arrested and injured in the meleé. Among those arrested are Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, Vivienne Westwood, artist Jamie Reid, and Bromley Contingent members Tracie O'Keefe and Debbie Juvenile.
- Roxy club deejay Don Letts begins filming The Punk Rock Movie, taking video footage of the London punk scene and editing it into a documentary.
- On October 28, the Sex Pistols' album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols is released by Virgin Records and despite being banned by most of Britain's record shops, reaches number one on the British charts.

- SST Records is formed when Black Flag guitarist/founder Greg Ginn needs an outlet to release his band's music.
- The Sex Pistols' disastrous US tour ends on January 14 after Johnny Rotten walks off stage at their Winterland concert in San Francisco, famously uttering "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"
- The Last Pogo movie by Colin Brunton films in Toronto featuring local bands, signalling the end of the original first-wave, featuring bands The Scenics, Cardboard Brains, The Secrets, The Mods, The Ugly, The Viletones, and Teenage Head. The show ends in a riot.
- Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious is charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen who was found dead on the morning of October 12, 1978 at New York's Chelsea Hotel.
- Rough Trade Records, a music store opened in 1976 in London begins working as a record label and signs almost exclusively punk inspired bands.
- Film director Derek Jarman releases the cult punk-themed film Jubilee, featuring Adam Ant, Toyah Willcox, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and Malcolm McLaren protegé and early punk fashionista, Jordan.
- Blondie finally achieve worldwide success with their third album, Parallel Lines, mixing together the style of 60's vocal pop and garage and the energy of new punk rock movement. Debbie Harry becomes a new icon for the younger generations.
- Events
- Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious dies of a heroin overdose at the age of 21.
- Nina Hagen creates a media uproar after appearing on Austrian talk-show Club 2 discussing female orgasm and simulating masturbation.
- By February or March, singer John Foxx decided to leave Ultravox to begin a solo career. Ultravox only was proto-punk during the releasings of the "Young Savege" single and the "Ha!-Ha!-Ha!" album. He was replaced by ex-Rich Kids Midge Ure.

- Former Plasmatics singer Wendy O. Williams dies by self inflicted shot-gun wound on April 6, 1998 at the age of 49.
- Scott Raynor leaves blink-182 and is replaced by Travis Barker.

- Ari Up and Tessa Pollitt reform The Slits.
- Derrick Plourde, former drummer of R.K.L., Lagwagon, Bad Astronaut, Jaws, and The Ataris, dies on March 30, 2005 at the age of 33.
- Big Boys singer Randy "Biscuit" Turner dies August 18, 2005 dies at the age of 56.
- The Vandals former lead singer Stevo (Steve Jensen) dies on August 20, 2005 at the age of 46.
- Former R.K.L. drummer Richard "Bomer" Manzullo passes away on December 12, 2005.
- Events
- R.K.L. singer Jason Sears died on January 31 due to complications while undergoing a detox treatment involving ibogaine in Tijuana, Mexico. He died only eight days after his 38th birthday.
- Glue Gun reunites and their singer Bob Oedy would become the remaining original member of the band.
- Colin Brunton starts shooting The Last Pogo Jumps Again, a history of Toronto/Hamilton/London, Ontario punk rock circa 1976 - 1978, featuring clips from his 1978 punk rock documentary The Last Pogo.
- Gorilla Biscuits reunite for a couple shows after a 15 year hiatus.
- CBGB's closes its doors on October 31.
- Events
- On January 18, former Social Distortion bassist Brent Liles, who played on their first album Mommy's Little Monster and is featured in the tour documentary Another State of Mind, died after being hit by a semi truck while riding a dirt bike in Placentia, California. He was 43 years old.
- On February 10, Alan "Nidge" Miller from Blitz was struck by a car and died the morning after a concert in Austin, Texas.
- On February 27, The Circle Jerks post a new song, titled "I'm Gonna Live", on their MySpace. This marks the first time the band has released new material in over ten years.
- On March 12, Matchbook Romance announce they would be going on a long-term hiatus.
- Patti Smith is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12.
- On July 27, The Offspring announce on their website that Atom Willard has left the band and is replaced by former Face to Face and Saves the Day drummer Pete Parada.
- On October 11, frontman Dicky Barrett announces that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones have reformed and would perform together for the first time in four years at a 10th official Hometown Throwdown at Cambridge's famed Middle East club on December 26–27.
- October 21, Paul Fox, guitarist and singer for The Ruts dies of lung cancer at age 56.
- On December 13, it was announced that 22 Jacks have reformed after a six year hiatus.
- Events
- On January 3, drummer Adam Pfahler announces that Jawbreaker had recently got back together. [1] [2]
- On January 4, the reunited 22 Jacks performed their first concert since breaking up in 2001. [3]
- On January 29, Face to Face announce on their website that they would reunite for a tour.
- On April 21, it was reported that Dynamite Boy would reunite for a couple shows. [4]
- On August 13, the reunited Big Drill Car perform together for the first time in thirteen years at Fitzgerald's Pub in Huntington Beach, California. [5]
- On August 21, legendary producer and engineer Jerry Finn (known for work on albums by blink-182, AFI, Rancid, Pennywise, Alkaline Trio, The Offspring, MxPx, +44, Sum 41, and Morrissey) died of brain hemorrhage after a week of being taken off of life support. He was 39 years old.
- From October 4 to December 13, The Offspring's "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid", a song off their new album, stays #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart for 11 weeks, becoming the band's biggest hit to date.
- On October 31, former Descendents guitarest Frank Navetta died after a short bout of illness.
- X-Ray Spex get back together for a one-off gig at the Legendary Roundhouse.
- Dead Kennedys get back together for a tour around the US in early June with new singer.
- The Sonics do a series of reunion shows at The Garage, Islington, London.
- On October 15, Teenage Head's Frankie Venom died after a battle with throat cancer.
- Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker, nearly dies in a plane crash which leads to the band talking again.
