Jackman was drafted 38th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Jackman attended Park Center High School in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, where he earned all-state honors. He then attended Minnesota State University, Mankato for two seasons.

Jackman made his professional debut in the 2002–03 season with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL, affiliate of the Blue Jackets. Tim made his NHL debut with the Jackets in the 2003–04 season appearing in 19 games, scoring 1 goal and 2 assists.

On October 8, 2005, Jackman was traded by the Blue Jackets, along with Geoff Sanderson to the Phoenix Coyotes for Jason Chimera, Mike Rupp and Cale Hulse.[1] He spent the majority of the year with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL but also played in 8 games for the Coyotes. Jackman was traded again in the 2005–06 season from the Coyotes to the Los Angeles Kings for Yanick Lehoux on March 9, 2006.[2]

Tim spent the most part of the 2006–07 season with affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. He managed only 5 games with the Kings.

On July 5, 2007, Jackman signed as a Free Agent with the New York Islanders to a one-year contract.[3] He split the year between the Islanders and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before re-signing to another one-year contract on June 2, 2008.[4]

On November 14, 2009, Jackman celebrated his 28th birthday by scoring a goal 16 seconds into the Islanders game in Florida. According to the Elias Sports Bureau it was the earliest goal in NHL history by a player on his birthday. [5]
