Roman empire under Hadrian (ruled 117-38), showing imperial province of Thracia in southeastern Europe.

Thracia was the name of a province of the Roman empire. It was established in AD 46, when the former Roman client state of Thrace was annexed by order of emperor Claudius (ruled 41-54).

Under the administrative reforms of Diocletian (ruled 284-305), Thracia's territory was divided into 4 smaller provinces, Thracia, Haemimontus, Rhodope and Europa. These belonged to the diocese of Thraciae, which in turn was part of the Prefecture of the East.
