Coordinates: 53°14′01″N 01°02′42″W / 53.23361°N 1.045°W Thoresby Hall is a stately home in the Dukeries, Nottinghamshire about 3 miles (4.8 km) from Ollerton. After the original building, built during the reign of Charles I of England, was destroyed by fire in 1745 it was rebuilt further from the estate's lake by John Carr in 1767–1772 and again by Anthony Salvin in 1865–1875. The hall measures 55 metres on its east and south fronts and 48 metres on its west front. The impressive Great Hall, which contains a gallery originally for minstrels, is 19 metres long and 14 metres high. It is the thus the third building to hold the name; since its sale the family have built Thoresby Hall (IV) a Palladian villa nearby. In the 20th century the house was threatened by subsidence caused by coal mining. The buildings were sold in 1989 to the Coal Board and after passing through a number of owners passed into the hands of the Warner Leisure Group. The best elements of the collection were kept by the family and fill their new house nearby while much of the rest was put up for auction and thus split up. It was reopened in 2000 as a 200-room country house hotel with spa facilities. Due to this the hall has been expanded. The Estate is still in the hands of a the family with only a few acres of immediate grounds and gardens staying with the hotel though the family has granted limited conditional right of access. Past residents include the Duke of Kingston and the Earl Manvers, and also it was the birthplace of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. [edit] External links |
