This TV (also referred to as "This TV Network" or just "this" in on-air promotions) is a general entertainment television network designed for digital television subchannels. The network is a joint venture between film/TV studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting Co., and launched on November 1, 2008. The "This TV" name was chosen as a branding and marketing avenue for the network and its stations, with proposed slogans such as "THIS is the place for movies," "THIS is what you're watching," and "It doesn't get any better than THIS!". This TV is available in many markets on terrestrial television stations and selected cable systems, as well as free-to-air C-band satellite via AMC-3 in DVB-S format.
[edit] ProgrammingThis TV's program schedule relies on the extensive library of films and TV programming currently owned by MGM and subsidiary United Artists (notably excluding the pre-1986 MGM film/TV library, whose rights are currently held by Turner Entertainment and Time Warner). Though such vintage series as The Patty Duke Show and The Outer Limits are featured, along with Stargate SG-1 on Sunday nights, the network's lineup places a greater emphasis on movies, including prime-time double features every night. The film roster does not concentrate on films from any specific era, meaning films from the Depression era to contemporary times are featured. There are no plans for any original programming on the network, although the use of on-air presenters had been considered for This TV's movie broadcasts.[1] The network's continuity announcer is Milwaukee radio personality and Miller Park PA system announcer Robb Edwards. This TV also features a daily block of children's programming called Cookie Jar Toons (including shows that meet the E/I content requirements) that is handled by Toronto-based Cookie Jar Entertainment. [edit] Operations and station clearanceThis TV was formally announced on July 28, 2008, with a planned launch date of the following autumn.[2][3] The network had a formal on-air launch date of November 1, 2008,[4] though some stations may have "soft launched" the network one day earlier--October 31, 2008--to carry some Halloween-themed programming that the network provided.[5] This TV airs 24 hours a day in a 480i standard definition broadcast format. This TV's operations is overseen by Neal Sabin, who in his role as Weigel Broadcasting's executive vice president launched MeTV, a classic TV format similar to This TV, on Weigel-owned stations in Chicago and Milwaukee. Jim Marketti, president/CEO of Marketti Creative Group, was hired in August 2008 as This TV's creative director, focusing on the network's marketing and promotion.[6] MGM handles sales for the network through their New York City offices. [edit] This TV affiliatesSee also: List of This TV affiliates In addition to Weigel-owned stations in Chicago (WCIU) and Milwaukee (WDJT-TV), This TV reached agreements with several ownership groups to add the network to some of their stations in 2009. The group list includes stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting, Post-Newsweek Stations, Fisher Communications, Hearst-Argyle Broadcasting, and recent additions Tribune Broadcasting, Raycom Media and Belo.[7][8] As of January 2009[update], the clearances make This TV available to an estimated 60% of US households.[9][10] An earlier report predicted This TV would have a coverage target of 50%-70% of the United States by the proposed February 2009 switchover to all-digital broadcasting.[11] A number of NBC affiliates have added This TV as a replacement for the now-defunct NBC Weather Plus service. Equity Media Holdings has also selected This as a replacement for Retro Television Network on some of its stations after Equity dropped it relationship with RTN in January 2009 due to payment disputes.[12] Stations that carry the network have the option to air select This TV programming on their main channels; they also have the option to pre-empt some programming in favor of other programming, either local in nature or through a dual affiliation with another network (the latter occurs on This TV affiliates in Columbus, Dayton, Richmond, Boise, and Charlottesville).[13] [edit] References
