The Thessaloniki Urban Area consists of fourteen municipalities. It is the urban core of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area. The urban area is sometimes referred to as the city of Thessaloniki, as there is no clear visual distinction or geographic barrier between the municipality of Thessaloniki and the other municipalities of the area. The largest of the municipalities, in terms of population is the municipality of Thessaloniki. When Thessalonians refer to the city of Thessaloniki, they refer to this urban area. The municipality of Thessaloniki is commonly called kentro, meaning 'center'. The municipalities in the urban area had a combined population of 763,468 inhabitants in the 2001 Greek census, while their combined land area is 93.174 km².
