The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural-fantasy horror television series developed by Kevin Williamson, based on the book series of the same name by L. J. Smith. The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who falls in love with vampire Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). The series also focuses on the lives of Elena's friends and other inhabitants of the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. The series is a mix of teen drama and the supernatural. The series premiered on September 10, 2009 on The CW Television Network, and has become The CW's best performing show.[1] On October 21, 2009, the series was given a full, 22-episode first season.[2] Forbes.com includes the series in a so-called "vampire craze" in entertainment, beginning with HBO's True Blood and the Twilight film series, continuing with the film Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, and the upcoming film Daybreakers.[3]
[edit] ProductionOn February 6, 2009, Variety announced that The CW had greenlit the pilot for The Vampire Diaries with Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec set as the writers and executive producers.[4] On May 19, 2009, the series was officially ordered for the 2009-2010 season.[5] The pilot episode was filmed in Vancouver, but the rest of the episodes have been filmed in Covington (which doubles as the fictional small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia) and Monroe, Georgia,[6] to take advantage of local tax incentives. Owing to strong ratings, the initial 13-episode order was expanded to a full 22-episode season on October 21, 2009.[2] Williamson has stated the series will not focus on high school but is more the story of a small town.[7] After November 19th, The Vampire Diaries will be placed on an 8-week hiatus. The next new episode will air on January 21st, 2010.[8] [edit] Cast and charactersThe Vampire Diaries features an ensemble cast of nine regular speaking roles which were mainly adapted from the book series. Most of the characters are teenagers, but the cast also includes adult roles. The characters are mainly humans and vampires, but the show also includes various other supernatural beings. The series has not yet revealed all of the characters, namely Meredith Sulez, Klaus and Margaret Gilbert; the latter character has been changed to a male and is shown as older. The character of Matt Honeycutt is depicted as Vicki Bennett's brother in the series and they have both taken the surname of "Donovan". Elena Gilbert, portrayed by Nina Dobrev, and Stefan Salvatore, portrayed by Paul Wesley, are the show's main protagonists; they are involved in a romantic relationship with each other. Ian Somerhalder portrays Damon Salvatore, Stefan's evil vampire brother. Candice Accola portrays Caroline Forbes, Elena's self-absorbed friend and Damon's "puppet." Katerina Graham plays Bonnie Bennett, Elena's best friend and a witch with extraordinary powers who is connected to the history of the town. Zach Roerig plays Elena's ex-boyfriend and Caroline's love interest Matt Donovan, with Kayla Ewell playing his sister Vicki Donovan. Michael Trevino plays Vicki's ex-boyfriend Jeremy's rival and presumed werewolf, Tyler Lockwood. With the role of Margaret Gilbert being cut, the character of Jeremy Gilbert played by Steven R. McQueen was added. He plays Elena's younger brother and Vicki's love interest. Finally, Sara Canning plays Jenna Summers, Jeremy's and Elena's caring aunt. [edit] International distribution[edit] ReceptionThe Vampire Diaries initially received mixed reviews. Entertainment Weekly gave the pilot a B+, stating that the show "signals a welcome return to form for writer-producer Kevin Williamson". They end by saying that "Diaries promises us a season of sharp-tongued amusement."[10] Metacritic gave the show a score of 50/100 based on 22 critical reviews, indicating mixed to average response.[11] Its premiere on September 10, 2009 gave The CW its biggest series premiere scoring 4.9 million viewers.[12] Many TV critics felt the series improved with each episode. The Los Angeles Times reviewer, Carina MacKenzie, found the sixth episode to be particularly strong.[13] The San Diego Union-Tribune said: "The supernatural drama is a first-class production, featuring an insanely gorgeous cast, sharp scripts and a brooding vibe that is hard for even the most levelheaded adult to resist."[14] Mike Hale of The New York Times gave the series an honorable mention on his list of the top TV shows of 2009.[15] The New York Post praised the portrayal of Elena as a strong-minded woman who doesn't allow her feelings for her boyfriend to control her.[16] [edit] References
