[edit] History

The founding of the Revue in around 1952/3 is shrouded in mystery. The most accurate account of it to date is probably that of Michael Palin, former Revue Director, who describes how his brother-in-law and 'another mad gentleman' started the Oxford Theatre Group, as a source of funding for Edinburgh shows, in the early 1950s. From this, he "helped found an offshoot group, the Oxford Revue Group, to take a revue up to the Edinburgh Fringe". [1]

Former members include Michael Palin, Terry Jones, (who later became members of Monty Python), Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett, Rowan Atkinson, Ken Loach, Angus Deayton, Rebecca Front, Armando Iannucci, Richard Curtis, Philip Pope, Al Murray, Laura Solon, Katy Brand, Katherine Parkinson, Peter Harness, Sally Philips, Ben Moor, Emma Kennedy, Danny O'Brien, David Schneider, Geoffrey Perkins, Imogen Stubbs, Patrick Marber, Stewart Lee and Richard Herring. [2]

[edit] Current activities

During the academic year 2007-8, The Oxford Revue produced a combination of regular, experimental one-night shows, and more ambitious, larger-venue shows. Throughout the year, the Revue performed fortnightly 'Write Off's - intimate nights of new sketches at the Wheatsheaf pub. In November, the Revue ran for a week at the OFS studio, Oxford, in a show entitled 'FEAR'. Later, in April, the annual 'The Oxford Revue and Friends' show, with the Cambridge Footlights and Durham Revue, sold out the Oxford Playhouse. The show was exceptionally well received. [3]

Benefits for UNICEF and the satirical magazine The Oxymoron; and slots at Pembroke Arts Week and Worcester Ball, completed the year's schedule.

In August 2008, the Revue took a new show, 'Bonfire of the Ottomans', to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It was received critically as one of the Revue's best recent Edinburgh shows. [4] [5]

In January 2009, the Revue took their latest show to the Canal Cafe Theatre in London. All the shows sold out and were enthusiastically received by the London crowd.

In February 2009, the Revue ran for a week at the OFS Studio, Oxford, in a show entitled 'Renegade'. The shows sold well and received 4 star reviews from both the Cherwell and the OxStu.
