The Medium is the student-run weekly entertainment newspaper at Rutgers University. It has often been the object of criticism due to its politically incorrect nature. The paper refers to itself as "The Entertainment Weekly of Rutgers University." As a result of frequent attacks on their right to print offensive material, the editors and contributors of The Medium have turned the paper into a veritable exercise of their First Amendment Rights. Nearly all protests against The Medium have been largely ineffective because of the University's commitment to democracy.
[edit] Sections[edit] NewsThe front pages of The Medium provide a satirical look at actual Rutgers and world news. [edit] Opinions/EditorialsThe Opinions section has the Editor in Chief's weekly address, although this is not so much the case any longer, and it is also editorial essays from Rutgers students, and the staff writers as well. [edit] FeaturesFeatures includes an array of various content and articles ranging from submission contests to staff biographies, and how-to guides. [edit] ArtsStudent artwork, crosswords, art and music reviews, and cartoons usually appear in this section. [edit] PersonalsAnonymous messages are printed in newspaper classifieds style, allowing students to freely criticize Rutgers administration, other students, and national establishments. [edit] What's Shakin'The back cover of The Medium has events occurring in at and around Rutgers, and is also home to jokes, brain teasers, and other odd-man-out content. [edit] History of The MediumThe Medium printed its first issue on September 1 1970 as the campus newspaper of Livingston College. During the 1980's, the newspaper began to abandon the traditional newsgathering and reporting activities in favor of its current format. This was partly due to the The Daily Targum becoming the official college daily newspaper across all of the New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses. Although at one time it stood as standard practice, The Medium no longer prints pornographic material. This has come at the request of advisers, and with mixed feelings from past editors and current readers. Many editors and staff writers live, or have lived, in Demarest Hall. [edit] The Medium Theme SongThe Medium has an official theme song, which the editors usually sing during production nights. The editors themselves have come into much debate about the official lyrics of the theme song however, namely the 2nd line of the song. The argument of whether it is "Share it wit' yo friends" or "Sharin' wit' yo friends" has caused the song to contain both lines, so that a peace could be reached. -Nothin' like a good pun -Share it wit' yo friends -Nothin' like a good pun -Sharin' wit' yo friends
