The Legends Of Treasure Island is an animated cartoon from the UK that ran from 1993-1995. It had two seasons of 13 episodes each and each episode runs for 22–25 minutes.

The series was loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson's original story "Treasure Island". Featuring a mysterious and dark storyline, it incorporates magic and many new characters. It was broadcast in the UK, The Netherlands, Mexico, Australia, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Iceland, France, Russia, Sweden and a few other European and Latin American countries. Originally a FilmFair production, The Legends of Treasure Island, is co-owned by ITV PLC and Cookie Jar Entertainment, due to duel ownership. Filmfair's other shows also have duel ownership.

[edit] Characters

This cartoon, unlike other Treasure Island cartoons and movies, featured the main characters as animals:

Jim Hawkins: Dog Ben Gunn: Dog Long John Silver: Fox Dr. Livesey: Dog Captain Smollett: Dog Squire Trelawney: Pigeon Pew: Rat Jane: One of the exclusive characters for this Treasure Island incarnation. Jane is an anthropomorphic vixen (but there are still some who consider her to be a cat) that was kidnapped by Silver and since her parents did not want her back she got stuck with him, already on the first episode she turn sides and teams up with Jim, to whom she appears to have feelings for as the series progressed.

Subsidiary recurring characters included the pirates Morgan (a hog), Nebbich (a hyena), and Rat (who was, ostensibly enough, a rat). These characters featured mainly in the first season and only made minor appearances at the beginning of the second before disappearing altogether. Other minor pirates seen during series 1 included a weasel and a rabbit among others.

[edit] Trivia

  • So far, Jane's surname remains a mystery (if she ever had one to begin with); this and the lack of detail on her past make her an enigmatic character.
  • In the UK, there was one video release in 1993 from Pickwick Video comprising of episodes 1, 3 and 4 (oddly omitting episode 2).
  • In America, episodes 1, 2, 3 and 13 were placed back-to-back to form an 86-minute feature length movie version of the series called Treasure Island, which was released on video in 1997 followed by DVD in 1999
  • In Australia it aired on ABC TV in the afternoons and 14 videos on the entire series was released in Australia by Reel Entertainment.
  • In Mexico only the first season has aired back on time period of 1994-1995, after that; reruns of the first season kept airing until around 1996 or 1997 on the back then animation cable channel ZAZ.
  • When Series 2 first aired in the United Kingdom. Reunion was shown as the second episode, however in the series continuity, it's actually the fourth episode of Series 2. The reason why this episode got aired first is unknown. When it was released on video in Australia, Reunion was on the same volume as Consequence, meaning that the videos were released in order of their air dates, rather than with the series' continuity.
