The Last Remnant (ラストレムナント Rasuto Remunanto) is a Japanese role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The game is directed at both Japanese and Western audiences and had a simultaneous release in Japan, North America and Europe, on November 20, 2008 for the Xbox 360.[5] The Microsoft Windows version of the game was released on March 20, 2009 in PAL territories,[1] March 24, 2009 in North America,[2] and April 9, 2009 in Japan.[3] A worldwide release on the Steam network occurred on April 9, 2009.[4] A PlayStation 3 version of the game had been planned, but published reports speculate that it may be canceled due to the game's poor sales and mixed reception.[6] The game was directed by Hiroshi Takai and was the first Unreal Engine 3 game to be released by Square Enix.[7] It is intended by Square Enix president Yōichi Wada to "become a cornerstone for [their] worldwide strategy".[8] Art direction was overseen by chief artist Kimihiko Miyamae and art producer Yusuke Naora. The game's soundtrack was composed by Tsuyoshi Sekito.[9]
[edit] GameplayThe Last Remnant features a brand new battle system labelled by Hiroshi Takai (director) as a "Turn-based, command-based system using symbol encounters." There are no random encounters.[7] It also contains quick time events, sequences where the player must press a combination of buttons with a correct timing to defeat enemies. Pressing a correct button on the correct timing increases the battle effect and increase the damage too. Also, the next player attacking will also be pushed up on the action list. In addition to the main character, the player's team (called a "Union") is composed of a number of soldiers whose skills vary according to different parameters. One parameter is the "morale" bar, which is affected by the events in battle and affects the way characters perform in battle. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once and are at the core of the gameplay. Nobuyuki Ueda has commented on the battle system, claiming that it is "much deeper than the few seconds it received in the movie".[7] Additionally, a high number of quests are expected.[10] [edit] SettingThe Last Remnant is set in a fictional world featuring a number of distinct humanoid races; the Mitras, most human in appearance, the Yamas, strong fish-like people, the Qsitis, small reptilians, and the Sovanis, feline people with four arms [11]. The story of the game revolves around "remnants", mysterious and coveted ancient artifacts of varying shapes and sizes which possess magic powers and which have been the cause of several wars throughout the game's history.[12][10] As Remnants come in varying forms, all cities throughout the world have one that their ruler is bound to that assist to govern and bring peace to their assigned realm. For example, Athlum has the Valeria Heart; a gigantic sword set in the middle of the Town Square. It governs courage and gives all those it surrounds the strength to stand up for their rights. David, the ruler of Athlum also is bound to the Gae Bolg; a weapon Remnant that is shaped like a cannon and can deliver devastating effects on the battlefield. Ten cities have been revealed for the world of The Last Remnant which are Athlum, Balterossa, Celepaleis, Ghor, Royotia, Melphina, Nagapur, Baaluk, Elysion, and Undelwalt. They all have their own monumental Remnants. [edit] DevelopmentTsuyoshi Sekito scored the game. The game's director is Hiroshi Takai, executive producer is Akitoshi Kawazu, producer is Nobuyuki Ueda. The artwork is led by Kimihiko Miyamae and produced by Yusuke Naora, and its music is composed by Tsuyoshi Sekito. Some of the head designers behind the game have worked together previously on titles in the SaGa series.[13] The Last Remnant was announced at a press conference at Shinjuku, Tokyo on May 10, 2007.[14] The game is the team's first game to use the Unreal Engine 3, and the first time Square Enix has had to adapt to new technologies and ways of development.[7] Because of the use of the new engine, the production time to seeing graphical resources onscreen was cut significantly, allowing the team to begin illustrating and experimenting at an early stage.[12] The development team planned to distinguish The Last Remnant from the Final Fantasy series and other command battle games. Because of the way battles are handled, the team has not been concerned with making the game for all ages. The Last Remnant was playable at Tokyo Game Show 2008, along with Square Enix other soon to be released RPG Star Ocean: The Last Hope.[7] [edit] CharactersThese are the characters that appear in the game: [edit] Rush SykesHe is an 18-year-old swordsman and the main protagonist, who is designed primarily for fans of traditional Japanese role-playing games.[12] He was raised away from war in the peaceful Eulam Village. He is an affectionate young man who wears his heart on his sleeve, nothing matters more to him than his family - and thus he is dedicated to taking care of his sister. But when Irina is kidnapped, Rush finds himself involved in a global conflict centering around the Remnants while he tries to save her. He also has the power to call out to remnants, like his sister. [edit] Irina SykesRush's 14-year-old sister, who lives with Rush on idyllic Eulam Island. She is kidnapped by a mysterious group who are after the power (known as Marion's Blessing) which rests within her, of which she has no understanding. Irina seems like an average teenager but she is able to stay cheerful and upbeat even through the toughest of times. [edit] David NassauDavid Nassau is the nineteen-year-old Marquis of Athlum. When he was young, he lost his mother; having Emma Honeywell be the maternal figure in his life. His mother kept a garden which his father had burnt down after her death, and eventually, David felt nothing but a deep hatred for the world. To his fortune, Emma came along and brought the charred garden back to life. The weapon he wields is called the "Gae Bolg", an enormous cannon. Despite being of royalty, he has decided to aid Rush in finding his sister, Irina Sykes. Though he is allied with the year-younger male, he has his own intentions, but promises to find Irina. [edit] Emma HoneywellOne of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. She is the 41 year old silvery-haired matriarch of the Honeywell clan, a clan that has served Athlum for years. She is a brave warrior that leads troops into battle with courage and vigour. She is constantly trying to better herself and those around her, while continually striving for justice. Despite her stern exterior, she is a strong maternal figure to David, and looks after him as if he were her own. After David's mother died, his father burnt down her garden and Emma replanted it, and brought it back to life. During her rite of passage, she met Rush's mother Marina in the Numor Mines. Marina saved Emma from a monster which almost killed her. [edit] Emma "Emmy" Honeywell the SecondEmma's daughter who bears a striking resemblance to her. Although she is not as stern as her mother, she shares her maternal nature and looks out for Irina and Rush. She strives to become as great, if not better than her mother. Before Emmy joins the party, she travels the world, this is done by everyone in the Honeywell clan and is seen as their rite of passage into adulthood. [edit] BlocterOne of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. He is 24 years old and is of the Yama race, which is a race of large, powerful fish-hybrid like people. Although he doesn't look it, Blocter is very kind-hearted. He and David grew up together, and Blocter constantly worries about the pressure put on David as the marquis. Blocter has vowed to spend his life working for David, who he considers his family. Being as young as he is, he tends to act impulsively. [15] [edit] PagusThe main voice of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. He is 55 years old and of the Qsiti race, a race of small, amphibian like beings. He excels at gathering information and is a historian by nature. He is generally calm and reserved; it takes a practiced eye to tell that he is also the generals' backbone. He spends his spare time paging through books and other materials. Sadly, few are eager to converse with him about the subjects of which he is most fond. [15] [edit] TorgalThe leader of the Four Generals of the Athlum Army. Torgal is 200 years old and is of the Sovani race - a race of four armed cat-like beings with an incredibly long lifespan. This race generally shuns outside contact making it unusual that Torgal would work for Athlum - especially in such a prominent position. His intelligence can make him seem slightly conniving. His past experiences have made him strong, but at the same time have left him emotionally detached from others. [15] [edit] Antagonists[edit] The ConquerorThe main antagonist of the game. He is an older man with long golden hair and crimson clothes, his origins are shrouded in mystery. He is designed to appeal to Western gamers and, in the original design of the game, was planned as a playable character with his own scenario[citation needed]. His ruthless nature is predicated in the garb he dons, as legend has it that its crimson hue is the splattered blood of his victims. The Conqueror is a Remnant himself, just like Rush and was supposedly created by Wagram to make people respect and fear Remnants again.[15] [edit] RoeasA striking blonde woman who works for the Conqueror, she works alongside Castanea.[15] [edit] CastaneaA giant of a man who wears heavy armour and wields a large hammer, he works for the Conqueror alongside Roeas.[15] [edit] The SevenA fearsome multiracial group serving the Conqueror. The Seven consists of an older Mitra man, a younger Mitra man, female Mitra twins, a Yama with an eyepatch, a Sovani and a Qsiti.[15]. Each of them is a deadly warrior and owns a Remnant.
[edit] WagramHe is an old priestly man who is allied with Jager. [15] [edit] JagerHe is a sinister man who plotted with Wagram to kidnap Irina. The player can later recruit him into his party. He also is a controller of a remnant-the Lob Omen[15].He is also the leader of The Third Commitee. [edit] Wilfred HermeienThe Duke of Nagapur, the chairman of the Congress and the chairman of the Academy, technically making him the most powerful leader in the world.[12][10] [edit] Audio[edit] Voice castThe English version was directed by Jonathan Klein of New Generation Pictures. It features Voice Actors both inside and outside of the California Area. The English version was recorded first, before the Japanese version, technically making the Japanese version the "dubbed" version. A soundtrack album was released on December 10, 2008, through Sony Music Distribution. It contains 97 tracks across three discs, and has a total length of 3:10:21.
[edit] Xbox 360 controller problemsThere have been problems mentioned with the Xbox 360 controllers being used with the PC version of The Last Remnant. On affected systems, the game seems to not recognize the controller. In order to fix that issue, any programs that deal with the configuration or emulation of the controller should be uninstalled. Also, unplug any other joy pads plugged into the PC. [edit] PC VersionOn April 9th 2009 Square-Enix released the PC version of The Last Remnant through the Steam platform. This version is in many ways enhanced from the Xbox 360 version, containing both game enhancements and gameplay changes. These changes contain, but are not limited to:
[edit] Reception
The Last Remnant has received a largely mixed reception, with an aggregate score of 66 out of 100 at Metacritic, based on 23 reviews.[18] The Last Remnant has received a 38/40 from Famitsu magazine.[20] According to an article posted on 1UP.com, the review praises the battle system for its unique, massive scale battles reminiscent of Romancing SaGa but refined to a wholly new class; however, the learning curve was criticized, as well as the length of battles and the inability to choose skills.[26] GamePro gave The Last Remnant game 2/5 stars, claiming the game "presents itself with an innovative 'East-meets-West' that suffers from unfortunate poor execution." While it praised The Last Remnant for "stunning visuals, solid voice acting, and immersive environments," GamePro also pointed out "repetitive battles, cluttered screens, and annoying 'quests'."[27] However, Kato of Game Informer writes that "the characters are over the top and ply heavily on stereotypes to elicit specific feelings from the player."[28] GameTrailers has given The Last Remnant an 8.0/10, stating "The Last Remnant is a hard game to judge. A person's enjoyment of it will be directly related to how much they can tolerate the persistent graphical issues. If you can get past it, there's a lot to enjoy [such as] the smart design decisions, and its unique battle system."[23] GameSpot gave it 6.5 out of 10, citing abysmal frame-rate problems and awful texture pop-in as well as obtuse combat mechanics as the game's main failings. It however praised the musical score and visual style.[21] However, Gamespot gave a revised score of 8.0 for the PC version, citing drastically improved graphical performance.[22] X-Play gave The Last Remnant a 2/5, criticizing the load screens, long cutscenes, and the battle system, saying the game played itself. IGN gave The Last Remnant a 5.3/10, stating that it suffers from extreme technical issues and is "strictly for the hardcore."[24] IGN's Three Red Lights Xbox podcast later criticized the game's lack of game progression achievements and the vagueness of the current achievements (such as "The Ravenous Hunter: How is Mr. Diggs? Try harvesting a certain item..."). The Australian Official Xbox Magazine gave it a 7/10 saying that hopefully it's not the "last" in the series, but did comment that there was too much loading and no Union tutorial. Square Enix reported that the game sold 580,000 copies (PC and Xbox 360 versions) during its fiscal year 2008.[29] [edit] References
