Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide is an American live-action situation comedy on Nickelodeon that debuted in the channel's Sunday night TEENick scheduling block on September 12, 2004. The series' actual pilot episode aired on September 7, 2003 without many of the current version's main characters. The main series finale television movie aired on June 8, 2007.

The visual effects were done by Robin Snelson. The show is produced by Apollo ProScreen GmbH & Co. Filmproduktion KG in association with Jack Mackie Pictures. Its main executive producer and creator is Scott Fellows, the head writer for The Fairly OddParents, which is why in the short titled "Day Dreaming", which aired on February 5, 2005, Cosmo and Wanda appeared (the former was portrayed by Daran Norris, who also plays Gordy the janitor in this show). Fred Savage is one of the show's directors. The other executive producers were Jörg Westerkamp and Bill O'Dowd. Rich Magallanes was the executive in charge of production.

[edit] Awards

In November 2007, the series won the Global Entertainment Award for best kid's programming of the millennia, in a ceremony held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Actors Devon Werkheiser and Lindsey Shaw were there on behalf of the staff to accept the award.

[edit] Locations

The show takes place at the fictional James K. Polk Middle School, in California (the flag can be seen in the school's entrance hall). The exterior of the school was filmed at La Mesa Junior High in Santa Clarita, California. The school is named after the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk. The school's colors are gold and green and the mascot is the wolves, which is a constant theme throughout the school's interior.

During Season 1, all of the show's action took place within the school, and with the exception of one or two notable occasions, everything happened indoors. However, during Season 2, the shows producers decided they wanted more exterior scenes, so more outdoor shots were used, and on certain occasions, the show took place off of school property.

[edit] DVD releases

In the USA there have been four DVD releases made for the series.

  • TEENick Picks, Volume 1 - features "Guide to: Computer Labs and Backpacks" (Season 1, Episode 9)
  • Special Field Trip Edition - features the telecast and "Guide to: Dismissal and The School Play" (Season 3, Episode 4)
  • The Best of Season 1 and The Best of Season 2.[1]

The Netherlands, Australia and Belgium, being the only countries, released the first season of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide to DVD on April 9, 2009.[2] The Netherlands also released the second season, although both seasons only with Dutch dubbed voices. It's unknown if there will follow more places in Europe, or someplace else.

In the United States, the entire series was only released on iTunes and no plans have been announced for a DVD or other type of release.[3]

[edit] Future

In June 2008, Werkheiser signed a development contract with Nickelodeon for a spin-off that would deal with his character's adventures in high school.[4] The show has not put the green light on yet as of December 2009, due to Lindsey Shaw and Daniel Curtis Lee being committed to their new shows, 10 Things I Hate About You and Zeke and Luther, respectively. Werkheiser has also commented in a YouTube video that there would not be a continuation of the show, citing budget issues at Nickelodeon as the main reason.[5]

[edit] In other countries

The series has also been broadcast in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Israel, Ireland, Argentina, South Africa, The Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
