Heart (also known as Heart FM and Heart Radio) is a network of adult contemporary independent local radio stations in England and Wales owned by Global Radio. Each station has local breakfast and drive time shows and share network shows at other times.

Heart was formed from a combination of three existing stations (in London, the East Midlands and the West Midlands) with the majority of GCap's One Network stations. The first heart station is based in Birmingham and got its name from being in the heart of the city.

When GCap was taken over by Global Radio in 2008, it announced plans to dissolve the 41 station One Network, with 1 station (Power FM) becoming part of the Galaxy Network, 4 stations (BRMB, Beacon Radio, Mercia FM and Wyvern FM) formed their own West Midlands Network which was then sold to Orion Media (along with Heart 106), 7 joined Capital FM in The Hit Music Network and the remaining 29 became part of The Heart Network.

[edit] Sunday Schedule

Before the launch of The Big Top 40 Show, ex-One Network stations took hit40uk whereas the three original stations took a show led by London-Drivetime presenter Emma B. Heart Cymru opts out of the network schedule on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (12-4pm) for an extra local programme in Welsh.

[edit] Criticism

The network has faced criticism from listeners, especially immediately after the rebrand programme, for its seemingly limited and repetitive playlist. In an episode of Mock the Week, comedian Andy Parsons, in a segment of "Scenes We'd Like to See", put across his own slogan for Heart: Heart FM: the same five songs all day long.

There has also been criticsim that there is not enough contemporary music played across the network and that since the rebrand when the number of local shows was reduced to just two (breakfast and drivetime), local radio has suffered as a consequence.

Since the rebrand, the primetime 7pm-10pm slot (7pm-12am on Friday and Saturday) has been filled with the Club Classics show. In this slot, as the name suggests, no contemporary music is played; a sharp contrast from Kevin Hughes' Music Control which featured on the GCap network prior to the rebrand.
