The Expendables is an upcoming 2010 ensemble action film written and directed by Sylvester Stallone. Filming began on March 28, 2009 in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, and Los Angeles and is expected to be released on August 20, 2010. The film pays tribute to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and early '90s, as the film includes action veterans from those decades (such as Stallone himself, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, and Bruce Willis).
[edit] PlotAfter years of unspeakable corruption that concludes with tragedies such as murder of American hostages and betrayal of foreign policies, and finally recognizing a way out of this terrible mess, the U.S. along with other Nations, equally seeking the end of this catastrophe, secretly put together a squad of its highest trained military personnel to finally over throw the dictator who has caused devastation in South America for over 20 years. The team sets out on its mission to complete the assassination, but with little help from the nations as they try to keep the mission secret. After they realize that there will be no outside help, they rely on their own resources to fight not only the dictator’s army but also the governments that set them up. [edit] ProductionProduction began on March 3, 2009 and filming began on March 28 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and other locations included Mangaratiba, Niteroi, Guanabara Bay, Colônia Juliano Moreira and Parque Lage. Filming ended April 25. Filming continued later on May 11 in Elmwood, Louisiana and Downtown New Orleans, Louisana which included French Quarter, St. Peters Street, Fort Mccomb, Claiborne Avenue and the Interstate 10 Overpass. Filming officially ended on July 1, 2009. On October 27, 2009, there was a pick-up scene at a church in Hollywood, California featuring both Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. On June 2, West Coast Customs Street Customs built three customized 1955 Ford F100s for Sylvester Stallone for the film. One was built for a crash scene, the second for green screen, and the third for Stallone to keep. The budget for the film was going to be in excess of $100 million, but was lowered to $80 million. The budget drop would cause some expensive action sequences to be cut."The Expendables has a seventy million-dollar budget," says Stallone's co-star Dolph Lundgren,[1] "and it's an old-school, kick-ass action movie where people are fighting with knives and shooting at each other." During the shooting of the film Stallone suffered a hairline fracture in his neck after a very realistic fight scene with Austin. Stallone needed to have emergency surgery and a metal plate inserted in his neck following the scene. About the incident, Stallone had the following to say: "Actually, my fight with Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking. I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterwards. I now have a metal plate in my neck." [edit] CastingJean-Claude Van Damme was personally offered a role by Stallone, but turned it down.[2] This reportedly led to Dolph Lundgren being cast instead although it is not confirmed whether it was the same part. The role accepted by Forest Whitaker was originally conceived as a role for Wesley Snipes but later rewritten for Whitaker.[3] Due to a scheduling conflict prior to filming, Whitaker was replaced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson for the role of Hale Caesar.[4] He was then replaced by former NFL player Terry Crews.[5] Steven Seagal was asked to play a cameo role, but turned down the offer due to negative experiences with producer Avi Lerner.[6] Hispanic actor Danny Trejo was rumored to play Emmanuel, but on June 15, he revealed that he was not cast for the role. Instead, both are in the works with Robert Rodriguez's Machete. On May 29, 2009, the script underwent a few re-writes which ultimately excluded Brittany Murphy's character, which would have been necessary months later due to the actress's death. Sandra Bullock was rumored to have a role in the film, but revealed that she did not even know about the project. Despite the news, she did express interests in working in another action film and would have liked to appear in the film depending on the storyline.[7] The role of the man who hires the Expendables, Mr. Church, was very difficult to cast. Initially offered to Schwarzenegger, he declined in favor of a smaller cameo due to his political career.[8] The role was then offered to Kurt Russell whose agent replied that he was not interested in "ensemble acting at the moment."[9] Stallone spent several months after principal photography determined to find a big action name for the part. Rumors suggested that the role had been offered to friend and fellow former Planet Hollywood co-owner Bruce Willis, who was busy filming of A Couple of Dicks (Later renamed "Copout" due to advertising issues). Willis finally confirmed on August 17, that he will play Mr. Church and that his scene will feature himself, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.[10] On October 26, Stallone, Willis and Schwarzenegger shot their scene in the Hollywood Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, marking the first time all three have appeared together on screen.[11] [edit] MusicComposer Brian Tyler announced on his official website that he has been hired to write original music for the film.[12] Tyler previously worked with Stallone on Rambo in 2008. Sully Erna from Godsmack is expected to also be recording a song called 'Sinners Prey' for the movie. [edit] RatingProducer Avi Lerner has reported that the film will be cut down to two versions, a PG-13-rating edit and an R-rated version, both of which will be screen tested to see which one will be officially released.[13] Lerner is considering cutting down the violence because of the success of recent PG-13 action films such as Live Free or Die Hard (known as Die Hard 4.0 outside the US). On October 13, the HD trailer was officially released online.
