In the years since the break-up of The Beatles, members of the band have played together several times.
[edit] On solo albumsMany of The Beatles have had other former Beatles play on their solo albums. For example, John Lennon's 1971 album Imagine has both George Harrison and Ringo Starr contributing parts to it. The only post-Beatles solo album for all members to be featured (although on separate tracks) was Starr's 1973 album Ringo. [edit] "I'm the Greatest" - 1973On this track from Ringo, Starr is lead vocalist and plays drums, Lennon plays the piano and sings harmony vocals, and Harrison plays electric guitar. It sounds very much like something off of Let It Be, with its texture, lyrics (using "Billy Shears", Starr's alias on Sgt. Pepper) and public noises insinuating Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Not surprisingly, when word of that session hit the media, furious Beatles reunion rumours (the first of several) began spreading. [edit] Lennon and McCartney jam - 1974 A Toot and a Snore in '74, the 1992 bootleg album Lennon and Paul McCartney participated in an impromptu jam session on 28 March 1974 during the recording sessions for Harry Nilsson's Pussy Cats album (which Lennon was producing). While the session was taped, it has yet to see official release. Roughly thirty minutes of it later went onto the 1992 bootleg album A Toot and a Snore in '74. The recording did not work well, as Lennon kept complaining about the mix in his headphones. In addition to Lennon, McCartney, and Nilsson on vocals, the recording features Stevie Wonder (keyboards), Linda McCartney (organ), Jesse Ed Davis (guitar), Ed Freeman (production and bass), and Bobby Keys (saxophone). Longtime Beatles assistant Mal Evans was also present at the session. [edit] All Those Years Ago - 1981Main article: All Those Years Ago Harrision had originally given this song to Starr; however, Starr considered it too high-pitched and out of his vocal range. After Lennon died, Harrison rewrote some of the lyrics and recorded it in 1981 with Starr and McCartney as a tribute to Lennon. [edit] Free as a Bird 1994 and Real Love - 1995Main articles: Free as a Bird and Real Love (John Lennon song) Further information: Jeff Lynne and The Beatles For the 1995-6 TV miniseries, The Beatles Anthology, the three surviving members asked Yoko Ono for some demo tapes of songs Lennon never finished. Ono gave them several songs for possible choices for the first true Beatles reunion song. Two Lennon demos, Free As A Bird and Real Love, were used to record overdubs on. [edit] Hoax reunion - 1976In 1997, a tape was found rumored to have once contained a Beatles reunion in 1976.[1] The story goes that five songs were taped, as listed on the tape box, at Davlen Sound Studios in Los Angeles, before the session ended in argument. The ex-Beatles allegedly agreed in advance to have the master tape of the sessions wiped out. The songs listed were:
In December 2003, Len Kovner, owner of Davlen Sound Studios, stated that the tape box and sessions were a hoax. He wrote, "This tape box, and others like it, all using similar vague references to likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, and Cream.....were used as a training tool for young engineers and tape operators, as an exemplar of how to properly label tape boxes, per studio and record company specifications, for our clients, library archiving, and domestic and international shipping."[2] [edit] Notes
