[edit] History

The establishment of Tezpur University is considered to be one of the outcomes of the Assam Accord[2], along with the establishment of Assam University and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.

Tezpur University was established, by an Act of Parliament[3], in 1994. The then Prime Minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao chaired the opening of the University.

Initially, the University operated from the premises of the Darrang College, in Tezpur. Land was acquired at Napaam, a suburb of Tezpur, about 15 kilometers east, of 242 acres (0.98 square kilo-meters), and the premises shifted.

[edit] Objectives

The objectives of Central University are:

  • It shall strive to offer employment oriented and inter-disciplinary courses, mostly, at postgraduate level to meet local, regional aspirations and development needs of the State of Assam
  • It shall offer courses and promote research in areas which are of special relevance to the region and in emerging areas in science and technology
  • Shall promote national integration and study of rich cultural heritage of the region and, in particular, the diverse ethnic, linguistic and tribal cultures of the State
  • It shall utilize "distance education techniques" to provide access to higher education for large segments of the population, the disadvantaged groups living in remote and rural areas
  • It shall upgrade the professional knowledge and skills of in service personnel for life-long learning.

Tezpur University is a unitary type university.

[edit] Campus

The University campus is at Napaam about 15 km. East of Tezpur, the head quarter of Sonitpur District of Assam. Napaam is a rural area surrounded by peace loving people of diverse caste, religion and language; yet it presents the unique feature of unity in diversity. The Napaam campus of the University is in a plot of an area of 242 acres (0.98 km2) of land. The campus is bounded by pucca walls. Napaam is linked by a PWD road from the National Highway No. 37A at almost midpoint between Kalia-Bhomora bridge and Misson Chariali. Tezpur is linked by road and rail with the rest of the state and the country. There is also a tri-weekly flight service between Kolkata and Tezpur. The institute is situated in a scenic place called Napaam surrounded by greenery and with many historic as well as tourist places nearby, including Ganesh Ghat, Agnigarh etc.

[edit] Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering came into being in 2006 as a result of renaming of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Technology were merged in 2004 and renamed as Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The Department of Computer Science was started in July, 1994 under the school of Science and Technology. It was started with the object of promoting specialized knowledge in the field of Computer Science and Computer Application. In view of the world wide shortage of skilled manpower in the field of Information Technology, the Department strives to channelize talented youth of the region to this challenging and knowledge intensive field by imparting quality technical knowledge and skills in the field. The programmes started under this department were Master of Computer Application (MCA), Master of Science (by Research) in Computer Science and PhD in Computer Science. The programmes have been designed keeping in mind the needs of the global Information Technology Industry.

The Department of Information Technology was started in July, 1997 under the school of Science and Technology. The Department was established with the aim to contribute towards research in the field of Information Technology and to fulfill the increasing demand for highly qualified manpower in the field for Industries as well as academic institutions. The programmes started under this department were Master of Technology (M Tech) in Information Technology, and PhD in Information Technology.

[edit] Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

The department was started in 1997 as the Department of Electronics under the School of Science and Technology. The department was renamed as Electronics and Communication Engineering under the School of Engineering in 2006. The primary objective of the department is to impart quality education, training and research at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in frontline areas of electronics and its derived Engineering and Technology.

The major areas of faculty expertise of the department include Communications, DSP, Biomedical Signal Processing, Bio-Sensors, MEMS, Instrumentation, Image Processing and Computer Vision. The department offers the following degrees: B. Tech. (in Electronics and Communication Engineering), M. Tech. ( in two specializations: Electronics Design & Technology and Bioelectronics) and Ph.D. (in various specialization areas of faculty expertise as mentioned above).
