Teviot Row House, the oldest purpose built Student Union Building in the world

Teviot Row House (colloquially known as just "Teviot" pronounced "Tee-vee-ot") is one of the Student Union buildings at Edinburgh University, Scotland. Run by Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA), it is the oldest purpose built Student Union Building in the world, having been opened on Saturday, October 19, 1889 (construction started in 1887).

Teviot was built in a 16th Century Scots architectural style with a crowstepped gables clasped by drum towers of the Falkland or Holyrood type but with large windows. It has large late Gothic traceried windows. [1]

It has six bars; a canteen; a coffee shop, a debating chamber (used for functions), a dining room, and many other meeting rooms available for booking by student societies. During the Edinburgh Festival, it is used by the Gilded Balloon and is one of the city's biggest Fringe venues.

Teviot has recently undergone a refurbishment programme which has included the creation of the Loft Bar on the Debating Hall level, and the conversion of the Library into a bar.

During the university period Teviot hosts a number of regular events that cater towards local students. These include an Open Mic Night, the Going Underground club night which specialises in indie music and a Sunday night Teviot Pursuit pub quiz which regularly attracts between 30 and 40 teams each week. Special one off annual events include a semester ending Christmas party and a Hallowe'en event which utilises the entire building.
