[edit] [purge] Template-info.svg Template documentation

The "Template:CommonsCat" generates a linkbox (as above) to link a "Category:" name in the Wikimedia Commons repository (edited using a Wikimedia login name). If that category name is misspelled or missing, the link will still appear "blue" even though the link will fail. Check spelling of names carefully.

[edit] Usage

{{CommonsCat}} – puts link-box with current page's name as the category.
{{CommonsCat|catnam}} – puts link-box connecting to "Category:catnam".
{{CommonsCat|catnam|shownam}} – puts link-box showing the title shownam.
{{CommonsCat|catnam|prefix= }} – puts space before catnam, on same line.
{{CommonsCat|catnam|position=left}} – floats link-box to the left side.
{{CommonsCat|catnam|align=left}} – floats link-box to the left side.

The two parameters catnam and shownam (1 & 2) are optional, and are intended for cases where the Commons category name is different from the Wikipedia page name. The first parameter is the name of the corresponding category on the Wikimedia Commons, without the "Category:" prefix. If this first parameter is used, then the template will display the Commons category name, which may be confusing to readers. This text can be overridden by the second parameter, where the Wikipedia page name would typically be used.

For example, on the Polar bear page,

 {{Commons cat|Ursus maritimus|Polar bears}}

produces a link to Commons:Category:Ursus maritimus displayed as "Polar bears".

[edit] Advanced typesetting

In early 2009, more articles began using advanced typesetting, to control the left/right alignment of link-boxes, and to center or wrap the text inside a link-box.

The parameter "position=" (or "align=") accepts one value, left, that moves the box to the left side, instead of the default right side.

The parameter "prefix=" allows putting a text-prefix on the name, or inserting a prefix newline or spaces before the category name. For example:

{{CommonsCat|catnam|prefix= }} - puts only a space, for catnam on same line.
{{CommonsCat|catnam|prefix=<br>}} - puts newline but no spaces before catnam.
 {{CommonsCat|catnam|prefix=<br> &nbsp; Category:}} - puts newline, spaces & "Category:catnam" on the 3rd line.

Using "prefix=<br>" allows the longest name, without wrapping to another line, while "prefix=&nbsp;" puts the name on the same line. The default prefix is "prefix=<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"

More information may be found at {{Side box}}.
