[edit] History

Gestevisión Telecinco was one of the first three private television channels in Spain. It was incorporated in Madrid on 10 March 1989, with three main shareholders, Anaya Group, ONCE and Silvio Berlusconi, each with a 25% share and was granted a TV concession on 28 August 1989. It started broadcasting on 3 March 1990. On 10 March 2000, the Spanish government renewed the concession for a further 10 years. In 1997 Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset acquired most of the shares in Telecinco.[2] Gestevisión Telecinco was listed on the stock exchange on 24 June 2004.[3]

The Group-Gestevision Telecinco, with a capital of 12,000 million pesetas, was issued a licence by the Spanish government on 25 August, 1989.

The main director of Atlas, Chema Baptist, added maximum responsibility of Telecinco's internet area and new business multiplatform to his duties. This decision was part of the company's policy of harnessing content creation and management in new technologies, and it took place immediately after the repurchase of 50% of his internet branch was finalised by Orange in 2001.

[edit] Paolo Vasile

In 1998, after the arrival of Paolo Vasile as Delegated Advisor, Telecinco became more prominent in Spain. The channel airs popular shows including Aída, CSI and Hospital Central. Between March 2006 and July 2008, for 29 consecutive months, Telecinco led audience figures in Spain. Currently, Telecinco is under performing and this has led to changes in its scheduling by moving or removing popular programmes to different timeslots in order to secure ratings.

[edit] Reality and the telebasura

Aqui Hay Tomate although axed remains one of Telecinco's most popular programming.

Telecinco is renowned for its reality shows, having produced a number of popular series in the last decade, Gran Hermano, Supervivientes, Hotel Glam, Operación Triunfo, among others. Reality shows feed many of the channel's other programmes such as the morning show El Programa de Ana Rosa, the afternoon and weekly nightly show Salvame and the weekly discussion show La Noria. All these programmes experienced a substantial ratings boost thanks to the "Reality Effect".

[edit] Company

It is currently owned by Mediaset Investimenti (50.1%), Vocento (13%) and free-float (36.9%). In 1997, the corporate identity was changed from Tele 5 to the current Telecinco, dropping Berlusconi's flower logo in the process.
