Dr Tanzil Haider Usmani is the incumbent Director General of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Karachi Laboratories, He has been on this position since 2004.

Born in 1949 in Rawalpindi Pakistan to Mehmood-ul-Hassan Usmani and Raheela Usmani, Tanzil attended early school in the garrison city amd later attended Punjab University Lahore where he completed his B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D in Chemistry from the same institution. Later he along with his family migrated to Karachi and joined PCSIR upon his uncles advice.

In 2001, while working with PCSIR, Tanzil submitted his thesis (Preparation and Characterization of Activated Carbon from Rice Husk, Acacia Arabica and Low Rank Coals) for Doctorate in Philosophy from University of Karachi and garnered praise all over. His name was entered in Marques Who's Who for his contributions to Science and Engineering. Following this in 2004, Dr. Tanzil Haider Usmani was promoted to the rank of Director General, Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Karachi Laboratories. There are also chances that he may be promoted to the rank of Chairman PCSIR.

Dr. Tanzil is married, and is a father of two girls. His wife Ms. Taj Usmani is an Assistant Professor in a girls’ college in Karachi. Both of his daughters are married. His eldest daughter, Sahar Saad is married to Saad Qureshi and they live in Karachi Pakistan and his youngest daughter, who is a medical doctor from Sindh Medical College, Dr. Fariha Usmani is married to Salman Khan and they both reside in London, England. Dr. Tanzil currently resides in Gulistan - e - Jauhar, Karachi.
