Tangier is a popular Philadelphia-based American rock band active in the late 1980s and early 90s. The band released three albums with a few line-up changes having a sound somewhere in the middle of straight-up Hard rock to Blues and Southern rock, this all making them somewhat a mixture of Free meets Johnny Winter meets Whitesnake meets Lynyrd Skynyrd . Tangier formed in Philadelphia by songwriter / guitarist Doug Gordon and grew up in the clubs with bands such as Cinderella, who would later help the group out by having Tangier open for them on on their second major tour. The first self-titled debut album, comprising Bill Mattson (vocals), Doug Gordon (guitar, songwriter), Rocco Mazzella (guitar, songwriter), Mike Kost (bass) and Mark Hopkins (drums), saw the band throwing AOR in the mix. It wouldn't be until the follow-up Four Winds, released some four years later with replacements; Gari Saint (guitar), Garry Nutt (bass) and Bobby Bender (drums), that the band finally received some recognition and a major label deal. It produced the hit singles "On The Line" and "Southbound Train". For their third album Stranded there were some line-up changes again. Separating with both Mattson and Saint, the band brought in vocalist–guitarist Mike LeCompt. LeCompt's gruff soulful vocals brought a heavier edge to the band. This album produced the hit single "Stranded" featuring Pamela Anderson in its music video. The band was always highly rated by the press and musical peer group alike yet was probably signed a few years late. The quality of musicianship, guitar playing, vocals talent and songwriting were markedly above most of the bands in the era yet timing is everything when the band leader and songwriter, Doug Gordon decided to call it a day.
