Jones was born in Pasadena, California on November 12, 1974.

She began her career as a model, appearing in magazine ads and television commercials. Her first acting role was as a guest appearance on the teen sitcom California Dreams. She had her first major television role playing a student in the short-lived ABC drama Dangerous Minds, and she had co-starring roles on the series For Your Love and The Tracy Morgan Show. She has appeared on other television series, including The Parent 'Hood, Veronica's Closet, Malcolm & Eddie, My Name Is Earl and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Her film credits include Booty Call, The Wood, and Kingdom Come & She's the sister of Tracey Cherelle Jones.
Tamala was voted as one of "The 10 Sexiest Women of the Year" in 2000 and 2001 by "Black Men Magazine".
She recently appeared in the music video for the song Independent by rapper Webbie as a female American President of the United States of African-American and Hispanic-American descent.
