Taewang, meaning "The Greatest of all Kings", was the title used by the rulers of Goguryeo (고구려), the northermost of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Goguryo's Taewang title had equal authority with Chinese Huangdi(Emperor). Also some Silla rulers including Boepheung and Jinheung used this title for their declaration of independent from the influence of Goguryeo. [edit] HistoryGoguryeo (37 BCE - 668) was established and ruled by the descendants of Jumong. Long after Jumong, King Gwanggaeto the Great, the 19th Taewang of Goguryeo, greatly expanded Goguryeo's territory to more than 10 times the size of Manchuria and Korean peninsula. The Taewangs remained completely independent of the ancient Chinese dynasties until the reign of Goguryeo's 27th ruler, King Yeongryu, who submitted to Tang Taizong, despite Goguryeo's victory over the Sui Dynasty. Goguryeo fell in 668, during the reign of Goguryeo's 28th ruler, King Bojang. | ||||||||||||
