TNA Impact! (official typeset "TNA iMPACT!") is the first video game released by the professional wrestling promotion, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). The game was developed by Midway Studios in Los Angeles and published by Midway Games.
[edit] Production
After periods of negotiation with Electronic Arts[5] and Rockstar Games,[6] TNA signed a multi-year agreement with Midway Games on November 7, 2005.[7] Midway announced their intentions to release Impact!, the first game in TNA's history, for each of the seventh generation consoles on March 2, 2006.
TNA wrestlers have been involved with the games production. The self described "hardcore gamers" Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles have both taken part in meetings with Midway staff to brainstorm game-play ideas, and Joe, Styles, Christopher Daniels, Senshi, Sonjay Dutt, and Jeff Jarrett were all a part of the motion capture sessions.[8][9] During the October 23, 2006 tapings of the weekly TNA Impact! program, members of the TNA roster were "scanned" for the game and audio samples of the Impact! Zone crowd were recorded.[10]
[edit] Features
TNA Impact! is geared towards a quick-paced, high-impact style of play, with less emphasis on submission maneuvers. It supports up to four players at once on a console, with online support—which includes tournaments—currently standing at one-on-one.[9][11][12] Online play is, however, limited to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. It's planned to feature straightforward, intuitive controls, with "accurate" and "detailed" character models.[13] Scans of the actual wrestlers were used for the game in place of hand-painted textures to include small details, such as skin texture and specific scars.[14] Finishers are accessed by building up the "Impact! meter" displayed on the screen. In the same area a color-coded damage indicator shows the condition of characters. The game also features mini-games for escaping pin attempts and submission holds.[13]
TNA's signature match, Ultimate X, is a playable match type, alongside the more standard Singles, Tag team and Fatal Four Way matches.[9][12][15][15][16] Submission and Falls Count Anywhere matches are also included.[16] Eight different venues—including TNA's main home; the Florida Impact! Zone, and arenas set in Japan, Mexico, England, Las Vegas, and locations designed to evoke the independent circuit feel—are available to house matches, with the Impact! Zone having an increased ringside area for play and hot spots for player interaction.[12][13][14] Liverpool Olympia is also a playable arena in the game. [17]
Midway has now introduced downloadable content which enables players to expand the game, making TNA Impact! the first professional wrestling video game in history to offer this service. The first downloadable content is in the form of new wrestlers players can add to the game, these being Curry Man and Petey Williams. These can be bought for 100 Microsoft points from the Xbox Live Marketplace and as an extra gift the player can download Mike Tenay free of charge.[18] This feature is only available for Xbox 360 and started on November 6, 2008, however, the content was initially glitched and made Curry Man come out as Christopher Daniels in his entrance and Petey Williams comes out as A.J. Styles and have the model of Senshi in the ring. These glitches were later fixed.
The story mode's main character is a wrestler named Suicide. During every iMPACT! episode after the August 14, 2008 version of iMPACT!, the words "whoissuicide.com" flashed on the screen for less than a second. On the website, it shows that Suicide is being taken from the game to real life television. [19] At Final Resolution, Suicide entered the TNA World.[20] At Destination X 2009, Suicide competed in his debut match in TNA, which was an Ultimate X match, and became the new X Division Champion.
[edit] Story Mode Plot
The story takes place around "Suicide", a acclaimed wrestler in TNA. Before a title shot LAX Members (Homicide and Hernandez) threaten him to take a dive. Suicide refuses and wins his title shot. Outside the iMPACT Zone Suicide is ambushed by LAX and is brutally beaten and left for dead in Mexico, but is found by paramedics. When he is released from the hospital Suicide joins up with a wrestling company and wins a gauntlet match and is sent to the U.S. as part of the gimmick. After defeating three wrestlers, James Storm looking for TNA talent challenges Suicide to a match to get in TNA which he wins and is flown to Florida for an audition. There Suicide meets Kevin Nash and becomes a TNA wrestler. After winning a few matches, Suicide is attacked by an unknown masked personality and is told "To do what he is told." Fearing for his well-being Kevin Nash give Suicide Eric Young for a Tag Team partner to which Eric names the team the "Salty Biscuits". After winning a match against the Motor City Machineguns, Suicide and Eric young are attacked by LAX and remembers that he was attacked by LAX and left for dead but can't remember why. After a few more matches LAX set up a Tag Team title shot against Suicide and Eric Young which Suicide and Eric win but after winning the belts A.J. Styles and Christopher Daniels are sent out by a person in the shadows. A.J. beats Eric so bad that he is put in the hospital. Suicide realizes that there is a "Big Man". Suicide goes back to being a single wrestler but after a match against Sonjay Dutt, Daniels taunts Suicide and feeling unsafe, travels to Japan but after winning a few matches, A.J. Styles attack Suicide and both fight to which Suicide wins.
Suicide notices Samoa Joe looking at him and thinks that Joe is the Big Man. Suicide heads to the locker room and is confronted by Jeff Jarrett how is revealed to be the Big Man and he was the one that ordered LAX to beat him and leave him for dead. Jarrett sets up a Ultimate X match up as Suicide Vs. Joe and Daniels but Joe betrays Daniels and Suicide is able to get the X. Its revealed that Joe and Nash are old friends and was a plant and Jarrett's organization to get info about why they are after Suicide while he didn't get anything he leap at the chance to be Daniels partner for the match. Jarrett confronts Suicide revealing that he kidnapped Eric Young and is hiding him is an unknown location guarded by LAX. Jarrett tells Suicide that he is going to win the TNA Heavyweight belt then lose the defending match against Jarrett for Eric to be safe. After a few matches Joe and Nash confront Suicide about Jarrett and the belt which Suicide runs past them. Nash and Joe fight him for the belt but lose to Suicide. After winning the TNA Heavyweight belt against Kurt Angle Suicide remembers who he was. Before the defending match against Jarrett, both Suicide and Jarrett talk in the ring and Suicide stands up to Jarrett and defeats him. Following the final match with Jarrett (the final cutscene) Suicide revealed that during his fight with Samoa Joe, everytime they locked up, he told the entire story to him. Afterwards Kevin Nash interrogated everyone on the TNA roster until he found where LAX was. Once they did they "busted in the door" and saved Eric. Once Suicide knew this he stood up to Jarrett. The final scene shows Nash, Joe, and Eric coming into the ring waving with Suicide to the crowd to which Suicide say it isn't about the gold around your waist but the gold (friends) around you. After this scene the credits roll.

[edit] Reception
