TMi (which stands for 'Too Much Information') is a Saturday morning children's show presented by Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes (aka Sam and Mark). They were originally joined by Caroline Flack (Series One to Three). It began on 16 September 2006 and has recently completed its fourth series on 19th December 2009. It normally airs between 8:30 to 10:00 am (9:00 am to 10:30 am Series Two and Three, and 9:00 am to 11:45 am Series One) on Saturdays on BBC Two. It replaced previous Saturday morning show Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow.
[edit] History[edit] Series 1 (16th September 2006 to 3rd February 2007)The first series of TMi was shown between 9 am and 11.45 am on Saturdays on both BBC Two and the CBBC Channel (from 9:15am) and ran for 25 episodes over 21 weeks (one episode every Saturday with extra episodes on BBC One every weekday morning in Christmas Week, although these were pre-recorded, not live like the Saturday editions) from 16 September 2006 to 3 February 2007. The show would start straight after What's New Scooby Doo? and it was the main replacement show for Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow which ended earlier that year. And just like Dick & Dom, there isn't a live studio audience (apart from the crew cheering on the guests). TMi, while comprising many of the features of Saturday morning children's programming such as cartoons, competitions and music, added a new spin to the genre incorporating an element of reality television and has been noted for its slightly teenage/adult content such as frequent references to popular culture and adult humour. During the week between airing the show, Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes lived in the "TMi Flat" where they were filmed by multiple cameras. Highlights of this footage was shown on the following Saturday's show. The first series was broadcast live from the television studio at 1 Leicester Square, London. Programmes featured in the first series included The Likeaballs (which was axed after a while), Fairly Odd Parents and it was the only show to see a new episode of CBBC's Prank Patrol every week. It offered a variety of features such as Sureley They Can't Make A Game Out of That, Loot Machine and Chinatown Challenge. Also, viewers could vote on the website what their most favourite music tracks were and the ones with the most votes would be played out with the video on air. The first series ended on Saturday, 3 February 2007, (as a best bits edition) and no summer replacement show filled in for the summer months, instead a normal mix of CBBC programmes shown throughout TMi's original time slot. [edit] Series 2 (8th September 2007 to 22nd December 2007)The second series of TMi started on 8 September 2007 on BBC Two and ended on 22 December 2007, at 9am with repeats from either 11am or 5pm on the CBBC Channel on the same day. For the second series, the duration of the show was reduced to 90 minutes, much to the anger of its fan base. It was also the first time that CBBC's flagship Saturday morning show was only broadcast between September to December (without leading into the new year ending in either March or April). The TMi flat was no longer featured and the programme is broadcast from studio TC9 at BBC Television Centre (CBBC's old studio from 1997 to 2006) which has remained since. New features include Thumb Wrestling Federation and Hedz.[citation needed] The theme of the second series is "This Time It's Personal". Viewers could choose one of the presenters to be their 'friend' by selecting them on the TMi website, and were then able to view exclusive online content relevant to their chosen presenter. The numbers of friends are revealed throughout the show each week, with each presenter shown with a percentage of the total vote. On 15 December Caroline was crowned "Queen of TMi" with over 106,000 friends with, on 22 December, Mark being named "the Biggest Loser" with 70,000+ friends. Sam finished the series with over 74,000 friends. Since after the first five episodes of Series 2, there were a few 'end of the show' forfeits where a presenter was set a task. Like on Saturday, 10 November 2007 Caroline being in the lead every week, Sam and Mark decided to get their revenge on her. If Caroline got more friends at the end of the show then she would get gunged, and she did. Also, the second series saw a 'Love Thing' going on between Sam and Caroline, which was a similarity to SMTV Live's Chums. And on the last episode of the series, Sam and Caroline finally kissed each other after weeks of many interruptions from Mark. Series 2 ended on Saturday 22 December being replaced by Basil's Swap Shop from January 2008. [edit] Series 3 (27th September 2008 to 13th December 2008)The third series of TMi started on 27 September 2008 on BBC Two and ran for 12 weeks ending on 13 December 2008. For the third series, the duration of the show was kept the same as the second series (1 hour 30 minutes), starting at 9am. The programme is still broadcast from the studio TC9 at the BBC Television Centre with an updated version of the Series 2 titles. The new series of TMi included Australian drama Lockie Leonard which was separated into three parts during the show. There was no theme for Series 3 and no website, instead fans could access its own webpage (only videos on the 'Watch' section of the CBBC website). The series featured two new games, one called 'Don't Let Me Down' (which was the first end of show game since Chinatown Challenge in Series 1) and the other called 'The Lawn Of Horror'. The Lawn Of Horror was the first 'phone in competition' since series one of TMi, as the BBC had banned phone in competitions after it had deceived viewers with a faked phone-in competition winner. Although no phone number was shown or mentioned to show how to get involved, apart from the website address. Call Yourself A Friend was axed from TMi and the TMi-ers were reduced from four to three (which has remained since). Lawn of Horror and Power of Song (a revised version of Power of Dance) alternated on different weeks. On the 1st November, Lockie Leonard for some unknown reason was replaced by an episode of Even Stevens. It saw the introduction of character 'Fat Sam' (played by Sam) who was addicted to the music of Status Quo and hosted the game Power of Song. This was also the last series starring Caroline Flack ending earlier than Series 2 on 13 December being replaced by Series 2 of Basil's Swap Shop from January 2009 and later Transmission Impossible with Ed & Oucho as the summer replacements. [edit] Series 4 (26th September 2009 - 19th December 2009)Series four of TMi began running on Saturday, 26 September 2009, for 13 weeks, with a mention at the start about ex-presenter Caroline Flack no longer presenting the show. Live and as live from studio 9 at TVC, the fourth series introduced a new earlier time slot of 8:30 to 10 am. Replacing Lockie Leonard were cartoons League of Super Evil (constantly seen on CBBC before Series 4 begun) and The Twisted Whiskers Show. New games included 'Are You Scareder Than a 10 Year Old?' and 'Hole In The Total Wipe Out Cube'. A revised version of 'Serious Game Show' returned, later re-named to 'Ultimate Gameshow' as of episode seven. This series saw Sam and Mark 'embark on a mission to find the mightiest TMiers in the land'. This was done by earning smarks. Each week a different set of TMiers tried to earn as many smarks (points) as they can during the games. At the end of the series Sam and Mark will invite back the 'Mightiest TMiers in the land'. At the end of Sam & Mark's search, Team Demolition are to be crowned 'Mightiest TMiers In The Land' on the last show. The first, second and sixth editions of Series Four were pre-recorded and most recorded live, this was to save money. The first guests of series four were The Veronicas and Raven's James MacKenzie. On the Halloween edition (31 October, Show Six, pre recorded) TMi was only broadcast from 8:30 to 9:40 am, finishing twenty minutes earlier than it normally does with the game Serious Gameshow edited out, out of respect for the tragic event which occurred during the filming of CBBC's Serious television series, and guest Laura White was only seen at the beginning of the show and she was supposed to have a chat with Sam & Mark. The team only receiving 500 smarks in the shows game "Are You Scareder Than a Ten Year Old" and finishing the end of the show with 1,800 Smarks. Viewers were also unhappy that the Breakfast Bowl of Doom had been dropped from series 3. Sam presented show seven and eight solo during Marks absence, with Helen Skelton from Blue Peter and Barney Harwood filling in for feature moments on the show. [edit] Series 5 (2010)At present it is unknown whether a fifth series of TMi will be commissioned. A friday afternoon version of the show to be shown over the summer months has been put forwards to the commisioners to which Sam and Mark are pushing for. [edit] Celebrity GuestsEach week one or more celebrity guests feature on the show. Previous guests have included McFly, Girls Aloud, Jesse McCartney, JoJo and Lil Chris. The first celebrity guest of the second series was the winner of Big Brother 8, Brian Belo. The first guests of the third series were Mcfly and other guests appearing were Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and The Jonas Brothers. Caroline announced on 15 November 2008, that she would be absent from the show for two weeks whilst filming the new series of Gladiators which she is co-presenting with Ian Wright on Sky1. No replacement was confirmed for these two episodes. However on the show broadcast on the 22 November Caroline appeared as the filming schedule for Gladiators was changed. On 29 November 2008, Caroline was away presenting Gladiators and during this episode pop star Alesha Dixon stood in for Flack's Fave, Alesha's Fave 5. The last guests appearing on the fourth series of TMi were The Saturdays, Diversity, Ed Petrie, Iain Stirling and Ore Oduba. Dominique Moore and Mini Viva were the only guests to appear twice in Series 4. [edit] Series One

[edit] TMi-ersEach week the presenters are joined by three TMi viewers who take part in games and hang out in the studio, these are known as the TMiers. The TMiers first appeared in series two where there were four, and since Series 3 the TMiers have been reduced to three. Series 4 has seen the TMiers earning 'SMarks' (points) to become the 'Mightiest TMiers in The Land'. The winning TMiers to become 'Mightiest TMiers In The Land' were Team Demolition (Series 4, Week 5) with a total of 2,810 SMarks which was never beaten by other teams after. As of the end of Series 4, there have been a total of 139 TMiers. [edit] The Love ThingIntroduced in series two, most weeks there is a part of the show where Sam and Mark are fighting to win Caroline's heart in a comedy sketch. In series two Sam and Caroline were supposedly in love and kept trying to kiss each other. When they were about to kiss Mark would always but in, causing the crew to burst out in laughter. Sam and Caroline didn't want Mark to know about their relationship. On December 1, 2007 towards the end of series two, Sam and Mark were chatting about how much they loved the TMi. Mark then asked Sam if he wanted to know a secret. Sam replies yes. Mark told Sam that Caroline had a boyfriend (TMi comedy character Mark Whitlas, played by Mark himself) Caroline then came in the studio and Sam and Caroline went into an argument. Mark defended Sam and the sketch ended with a 'To Be Continued'. The following week the sketch was continued but it was just Sam and Caroline arguing. The sketch finished with a gag saying 'To Be Continued (Again)'. On December 22, 2007 (the last episode of series two) Sam and Caroline were presenting a part of the show. Where all of a sudden Sam told Caroline about his feeling for her. Then Caroline started to mine the song 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. After 16 weeks Sam and Caroline kissed. Then it showed the whole crew cheering. Mark then came in and Sam told him the good news. Mark said that he had just booked the annual lads holiday. Sam had to turn down the offer. Sam and Caroline then went off. With Mark in the studio crying to the camera. Then Sam and Caroline then came in and told Mark that they could all go together. That was the end of The Love Thing for series 2. On October the 4th (The second in the series of TMi series 3) the love thing returned. This time round Mark had been going out with Caroline. Sam wanted Caroline back. Sam spiked Marks drink with extra hot chillie sauce, which caused him to collapse. When Caroline returned, she found Mark was missing and Sam just standing with a cup of hot beverage. When Caroline admitted they were going for a walk in the (Blue Peter/TMi) garden, Sam said "what a pity, suppose you'll have to go on your own" trying to get her to take him. Caroline then got out a picture of Mark and said she will take that with her. Sam started crying to the camera. On another occasion, Mark and Caroline are sitting on the TMi stage area, playing with each others nose and cheeks. Sam suddenly appears from behind the green light wall to the left of the stage, looking disgusted at Mark and Caroline. He says (in his mind, which can be overheard) that it should be him Caroline is going out with, and that he needs a plan to make Caroline Flack jealous. Alesha Dixon now appears saying "hi" to Sam. Sam reckons that if he was to go out with a celebrity (Alesha Dixon), Caroline would be jealous and go out with Sam instead. When Sam goes to talk to Alesha, he says "Listen Alesha, lets cut to the chase, your a good looking boy and im a good looking girl so how about you and me go out together" to which Alesha replies "yes". Expecting to hear "no", Sam says "Listen, you don't have to be like that, im not that bad looking....." and realises she actually said yes. When Sam asks "really?" she replies "Yes! I can't wait to tell all my friends im going out with someone who knows the hunk Mark Rhodes" Sam is very upset by this, and continues crying into the camera. The latest regarding the love thing story in series 3 is that Caroline has then fallen out with both Sam and Mark. It is unknown how the sketch will end, especially Caroline has now left the show as of the end of Series 3. [edit] Reception and CriticismWhile gaining little media attention (with the exception of the revelation on 18 July 2007 that it was one of the programmes which had deceived viewers with a faked phone-in competition winner on 16 September 2006, in its premiere episode.[1], a revelation that meant that its name appeared on the front covers of tabloid publications such as The Sun, Daily Star, The Daily Mirror and freesheet Metro) and unlike most British childrens television series, failing to sell into foreign television markets, ratings have been extremely good considering its network (BBC Two) and timeslot (9am), which have evened off at 600,000 (beating its predecessor Dick and Dom in da Bungalow which could only interest 500,000 in its final days) but reached near on a million on Christmas Day, 2006 (700,000 of which were aged over 16). This has prompted people on internet forums such as Digital Spy to say that it should be broadcast on BBC One. [edit] WebsiteTMi did have an official website from 2006 to 2007. But since 2008 there has not been a website for it, in it its place a webpage with a selection of clips and a chance to see episodes viewers may have missed on the CBBC website. [edit] Summer ReplacementsHere are some of the shows that have filled in for TMi's absence between 2007 and 2009 on CBBC on BBC Two and also what shows filled in in the run up to the first series after the end of Dick & Dom In Da Bungalow.
NOTE: After the first run of TMi, there was no summer replacement show instead a normal mix of CBBC programmes between 7 am and 12 noon. After Basil's Swap Shop (Series 1) run, there was not another show to fill in for the rest of the summer apart from a normal mix of CBBC programmes. This also happened after the run of Transmission Impossible from August up until the launch of Series 4 in late September 2009. For January 2009, there is no official summer replacement, show just a mix of CBBC programmes filling in. [edit] It Started With Swap ShopThe TMi team appeared on the BBC's It Started With Swap Shop programme on 28 December 2006, with a message to say Happy 30th Birthday to Swap Shop. The show also featured one clip of TMi from the first series which is featured in the 'Travel Back In Time' feature when they start with the current Saturday morning show, which is TMi and end up finishing at the very start with Multi-Coloured Swap Shop. They also mentioned about it on TMi towards Christmas in Series 1 with a mention of the Saturday Morning's website on screen. [edit] See also[edit] External links
