For other uses, see Symbian (disambiguation).
The Symbian platform is an open source operating system for mobile devices. It was created by merging and integrating software assets contributed by Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, and Sony Ericsson, including Symbian OS, the S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) user interfaces.
[edit] HistorySymbian is the successor to Symbian OS, following the official launch of the Symbian Foundation in April 2009.[citation needed] [edit] DevicesSymbian^1 forms the basis for the platform. It incorporates Symbian OS and S60 5th Edition (S60 5.0), which is built on Symbian OS v9.4.[1] The first open version of Symbian will be Symbian^2[2], however as of December 3, 2009 there are no devices with this version announced.[3] It has been suggested that Nokia might skip the Symbian^2 release of the platform. Instead the first phones running Symbian (not counting Symbian^1) will be announced in the first half of 2010 and will start shipping in the second half of 2010. These phones will run Symbian^3.[4]
[edit] ApplicationsSymbian Horizon is an application-publishing program and directory of applications for Symbian mobile devices that was launched on 27 October 2009.[7][8] [edit] References
