The next general election to the Swedish Riksdag will be held on 19 September 2010. Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt, leader of the governing coalition Alliance for Sweden and his party Moderate Party is facing a tough election battle against the opposing Socialist-led coalition Red-Greens led by Mona Sahlin, leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party with them leading the polls narrowly.

[edit] Opinion Polls

After the election in September 2006, the government slipped well behind the red-green opposition in the polls. A Sifo poll conducted in February 2008 showed s, v and mp leading the government with 19.4 percentage points. However, this lead begun to erode and by June 2009 the government and opposition were almost even, although as of August the opposition has widened its lead once again.

In the European Parliament election, 2009 the Pirate Party got 7.1% of the vote (earning at least one^[1] MEP). Exit polls showed it was the largest party among under-30 voters^[2] Polls have varied widely in the support measured for the Pirate Party, with some polls having the included as part of an "Others" category totalling around 2%. On the other hand, they got 2.7% in the June 2009 Sifo poll, and around 5% in the part of the poll conducted after the European parliament election on June 8th.^[3] A United Minds poll published in Aftonbladet June 23 showed a 3.9% support for the Pirate Party and 4.7% for the Sweden Democrats, meaning both parties have the possibility to enter parliament after the election,^[4] aiming to become kingmakers.^[5]
