The Suriname national football team is the national team of Suriname and is controlled by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond.

Although the former Dutch colony (named Dutch Guiana, until 1975) is located in South America, it competes in CONCACAF, together with Guyana and French Guiana. Suriname won the CFU Championship (Digicel Caribbean Cup predecessor) in 1978, were runners-up in 1979 and reached fourth place in 1994 and 1996. Until the independence of Suriname in 1975, it competed as the Dutch Guiana national football team. Unlike in the Netherlands Antilles, another former Dutch colony, it is ruled that players who move abroad to play in the Netherlands are not eligible to play for Suriname.[1] Many Suriname-born players and Dutch-born players of Surinamese descent, like Royston Drenthe, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Andwélé Slory, Ryan Babel, Aron Winter, Romeo Castelen, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink turned out to play for Oranje.

In 2008 Suriname entered the group stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying despite using only local players. With their two-leg victory over neighbours Guyana, Suriname faced Haiti, Costa Rica, and El Salvador in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONCACAF) semi-finale round. Suriname has also qualified to the second round of the Caribbean Nations Cup 2008. The Surinaamse Voetbal Bond has signed an equipment sponsorship with the Dutch company COPA to last for four years.[2]

[edit] History

Suriname has participated in the qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup since 1938, but has never qualified for the finals. The Surinamese team, consisting of internationals Surinamese and Dutch players of Surinamese origin, placed second in the most recent PARBO Beer Cup behind French Guiana.

At present (June 2009), the Surinamese football team is ranked 123rd in the world according to the officially recognised FIFA World Rankings, between United Arab Emirates and Haiti. The highest position achieved by the team is the 84th place (achieved in August 2008). 2 Edson Braafheid withdrew from the squad because of international obligations in the Netherlands.

[edit] Depletion of national team

Over time, Suriname has produced a lot of excellent footballers, who would choose to play for Netherlands, the former motherland, instead of Suriname. Some of the more famous include Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Aron Winter, Romeo Castelen, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Royston Drenthe. Also Surinamese who were born in the Netherlands such as Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit and Patrick Kluivert could play for Suriname, but they chose not to do so.

Although these players have chosen to play for the Oranje, some of them may turn out to play for Suriname during the international football tournament PARBO Beer Cup. This tournament is not organised by a recognised football confederation, and is therefore not officially recognised by the continental federations of FIFA. For example, Edgar Davids, Jeremain Lens and Milano Koenders have participated in this tournament in past years, even though they are not officially members of the national team.
