St. Lawrence is a Canadian town located on the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. As of 2006 the population of St. Lawrence was 1,349.
[edit] HistorySt. Lawrence's economy was primarily based on fishing until the recent collapse of North American cod stock. In 1992 the Canadian federal government implemented a moratorium on cod fishing [1], ending the longstanding industry. Also a Fluorspar mine in St. Lawrence was once a major employer in the community until 1978, when Alcan closed the mine. A wind project has recently been initiated by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for St. Lawrence. The project has resulted in the installation of 9, Vestas V90-3MW wind turbines. [edit] U.S.S Pollux and U.S.S TruxtunOn February 18, 1942, more than two hundred American sailors died when the U.S.S. Pollux and U.S.S Truxtun ran aground in Chambers Cove, near St. Lawrence. In 1992, a memorial entitled 'Echoes of Valour' was erected in dedication of the mining industry in St. Lawrence, the sailors who died in the U.S.S. Truxtun & U.S.S. Pollux disaster, and those who lost their lives in the World Wars. [2] [edit] SportKnown as the 'Soccer Capital of Canada', over the years the St. Lawrence Laurentians soccer club has provided fiercely competitive teams to the province's annual Challenge Cup tournament. The St. Lawrence Laurentians soccer club holds the record for most wins of provincial challenge cup championships. [edit] External links
