Construction began in 1881, and Archbishop John Joseph Williams entrusted the seminary to the Sulpician Fathers.[2] The school was completed in 1884. The first students began classes there on September 22, 1884.[3] In 1911, at the request of Archbishop William Henry O'Connell, the Sulpicians withdrew from the seminary.[2]
In a move to avert financial insolvency, the Archdiocese of Boston sold 61 acres (250,000 m2) of property to Boston College in 2004 and 2006, including most of the grounds and buildings of the seminary.[4][5] The Boston College School of Theology and Ministry was established in the acquired buildings in 2008.
St. John's Seminary remains active in its remaining building, St. John's Hall.
