[edit] History

The school was opened in 1953 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers. It celebrated its 50th Jubilee in 2003.

The Regal Theatre, in the city, was demolished in 1978 and the remains of the building were used as land fill for the College ovals.[2]

In 2003 St Edwards College celebrated its 50th anniversary and on the day of its creation Founders Day used to be celebrated at the school with markets and games. Since 2005, however, the Founders Day was replaced with the Walkathon, an event where the children at the school walk or run to raise money for various charities.

[edit] Facilities

St. Edward’s covers a nine hectare site on the shores of Caroline Bay. The College has three multi-purpose ovals, other sporting facilities, a multipurpose hall/gymnasium known as the Edmund Rice Centre (or ERC), specialised technology & art facilities, computer laboratories, and a purpose built food technology room.

[edit] Uniform

All students are required to wear school uniform; with the Summer Uniform differing from the Winter Uniform.[3]

[edit] Summer Uniform

The Summer Uniform is compulsory for terms 1 and 4; with:

  • Open neck blue shirt with College emblem on pocket (Junior; seniors wear white)
  • Short trousers with grey belt and College long socks (Junior; seniors in year 11 and 12 wear long trousers)
  • College pullover with school colours
  • Black, polished leather shoes
  • College cap (black) (Optional wide brim)

[edit] Winter Uniform

The Winter Uniform is more formal than the summer uniform, and is compulsory in terms 2 and 3 with:

  • Long sleeve College blue shirt for years 7 to 10; white shirt for seniors (years 11 and 12)
  • College pullover with school colours
  • College tie
  • College blazer
  • Long grey trousers with grey socks

[edit] Core Values

St. Edwards College has a focus on social justice and the teachings of Blessed Edmund Rice alongside academics and sport.

[edit] Social justice

The college has a significant emphasis on the concept of social justice and 'giving back' to the community; and is described as a 'Central part of school life at St. Edwards'. In 2002, Teacher, Patrick Dell introduced a program called The Waterford Project, where boys from years 8-11 perform compulsory community service and offers a wide variety of activities to help students complete their hours. The Waterford Project is named for Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers' city where he began his work.[4]

In conjunction with their teaching role, the Brothers are concentrating on troubled children and have opened an annex for such children, The Haven located at Terrigal.[5]

[edit] Academic arrangements

The College operate a year 7 Core Program where the students are placed in 'Core classes'. Here the students have one teacher in the same room, for their core subjects of English, Religion and HSIE. They then go to their other subjects. This approach helps blur the lines between Primary and High School.

[edit] Outdoor Education

St Edward's College runs an Outdoor Education program through camps, which are held in Years 7 to 10. The program provides a sequential course for the four years, developing skills of a higher order each year. All activities are supervised by accredited staff of 'Outdoor Education Australia', as well as a member of staff from the College. Some of the activities conducted on these camps include archery, canoeing, "deep and meaningful" conversation sessions, sailing, windsurfing, abseiling, rock climbing, mountain biking, initiative challenges and fencing.

[edit] Athletics

2008 - U/14 NSW Country Rugby Union Champions. Vincent Fester Shield Winners

2008 - Final 16 of the Arrive Alive Cup Rugby League competition

2005 - The school won its third state basketball title in four years, with Nick Spittles being named player of the tournament.[6]

[edit] Alumni

Upon leaving school, students are known as Old Boys and are able to join into the Old Boys Union; an organisation of ex-students that seeks to maintain the friendships created while at the College.[7]

[edit] Eddies Boys [E.B] - The Brotherhood

In early 2006, Year 12 students of St. Edward's College, created an underground brotherhood/secret society, much like skull and bones at Yale University. This society was born out of necessity, as around the Central Coast of Australia, students were being harassed by students from other schools. Thanks to this secret society, current students are offered protection by ex-students in public and many local business owners also offer easy employment to ex-students.

In late 2007, a student who received death threats from students from other Central Coast schools, contacted senior members of the St Edwards Brotherhood. The brotherhood arranged a meeting with the source of the threats and the threats ceased.

On 25 May 2008, two "Brotherhood" representatives, made a collective donation of $200,000 to local charities on the Central Coast (New South Wales) directly from the brotherhood's personal accounts.

On 28 February 2009, at a press conference in Gosford, it was revealed that construction of a Brotherhood gentlemen's club will commence in August, 2009. The expense is rumored to be around $12,000,000.

On 3 July 2009, it was announced to the Express Advocate Newspaper that an [E.B] record label, branching from the brotherhood's base corporation, will be opening a week after the construction of the gentlemen's club begins. It will focus primarily on Hip-Hop music and employ inturns directly from the year 11 and 12 students of St. Edwards College.
