A splitter is a device installed onto a table saw which prevents the material being fed into the blade from pinching the blade, thus preventing dangerous kickback of the material by the blade into the operator. Its primary function is to prevent injury to the operator of the tablesaw.

It is similar to a riving knife, except that it does not raise and lower with the blade and is generally mounted to the top of the table, rather than under the table and to the arbor and trunion assembly as a riving knife is mounted.
