South Plantation High School, also known locally as simply "South", is a four-year, public high school located in Plantation, a large suburb of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the United States. SPHS is part of the Broward County Public Schools District, which is the sixth largest district in the nation with over 258,000 students enrolled as of the 2007/08 school year. [edit] Academics [edit] Course Curriculum South Plantation High School offers a wide range courses, standard and elective. Magnet Specific: Biological/Environmental Engineering The college preparatory program provides students with experiences in civil, environmental, biological and geo-technical engineering. A full array of Advanced Placement courses are available. Environmental Technology The college preparatory program provides students with experiences in long-term and short-term land use plans while making decisions concerning social, economic and environmental problems. Science: Environmental Science, Honors Environmental Research, Animal Science/Aquaculture English: Honors English III - Florida Literature. (Magnet Specific), Analysis and Research. Honors Research III - paired with Health Health: Environmental Health. One Semester - Paired with Research 3 Computers: Multi-Media (Magnet Specific) Computing for Colleges and Careers, Engineering: Technology Studies (Magnet Specific) Medical: Medical Skills (Magnet Specific) South Plantation High School, also offers many Advanced Placement courses which can count towards college credit. They include A.P. English Language and Composition, A.P. English Literature and Composition, AP Physics South Plantation High School, is home to Broward's Environmental Sciences Magnet Program, which teaches students about wildlife preservation, ecosystem restoration, preservation of the Everglades, recycling, aquatic life protection and energy conservation. [edit] Standardized Testing Statistics In 2009, the schools Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) grade dropped to a D, from a C in 2008 and 2007, and B in 2006.[4] [edit] Notable Academic Achievements - On February 27, 2005, the 9th Annual High School Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing took place, with 5 select SPHS students being chosen. 2nd Place was won by Smith Auguste, Helder Gurgel, Joanna Korn, Ashley Mingo and Ryan Vlazny.[5]
- South Plantation Horticulture placed 1st in Forestry, 1st in Aquatics, 2nd in Soils and 3rd Overall in the Broward County Envirothon. The team consisted of Jake Edwards, Chris Deweese, Brian O'Neill, Megan Coffey, and Clarindy Gonzalez
- Dominic Lindsay from South Plantation placed first in the 2008 Fairchild Challenge out of 33 schools from the South Florida Area.
- Since 2006, South Plantation has produced five National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalits: Alison Thurston, Ethan Aldredge, Pedro Verona, Kamal Gray, and Kristina Lozoya.

[edit] Spring (January - April) - Business Professionals of America (BPA) - Students pursuing careers in the business and information technology fields, are shown how to advance leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills, through Intern Programs, Skill Assessment Guides, and Special Recognition Awards.
- Caring for Kids and Critters - Students earn volunteer hours by working at the Wildlife Care Center and at John U. Lloyd State Park. As well as, helping children's organizations and maintain the school campus.
- Chorus - SPHS offers 3 Choirs: Paladins, Women's Chorus and Show Choir. All of which perform at both Winter and Spring Concerts, and have been invited to Disney's Epcot to sing at the Candlelight Processional for over a decade. Students also compete at both district and State levels.
- Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) - Students who are interested in business marketing, management, and entrepreneurship participate in many activities, including the Fashion Show, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Adopt-an-Angel Toy Drive, MDA, SHAPE, Hurricane Relief projects, and competitions.
- Drama/Thespians- The drama program has recently put on productions of High School Musical, Peter Pan, West Side Story, High School Musical 2, The Boys Next Door and Alice in Wonderland.
