Simona Halep (born September 27, 1991 in Constanţa, Romania) is a tennis player playing on the ITF Women's Circuit.[1][2]

She started the year with a final in Nottinghill, lost to Arantxa Rus, then defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open Junior Championships, before losing in the semifinal to Jessica Moore.

At the ITF $ 50,000 tournament in Bucharest, Simona produced an enormous surprise by eliminating a former Roland Garros semi-finalist, Sesil Karatantcheva in the 1st round, eventualy losing in the quarterfinals to Sorana Cirstea in 3 sets, 6-3 3-6 1-6.

Won an ITF $ 10,000 tournamant in Bucharest against Stephanie Vongsouthi.

In the junior competition Simona won Trofeo Bonfiglio. She defeted in the final Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 6-1.

At Roland Garros Junior Championships, she entered in the main draw as the 10th favorite. In the first round she defeted Charlotte Roder, 6-4 6-1, and then Karen Barbat from Denmark, 6-3 6-1. In the 3rd round won against the 5th favorite Jessica Moore, 6-0, 6-1. In quarterfinals Simona beat Ksenya Lykina, 6-1 6-2. In the semifinals she meet the #2 seed Arantxa Rus, Simona defeted Rus, 6-3 7-5, and then won the all-romanian final , 6-1 6-7(3) 6-2 against Elena Bogdan. [3]

At the Makarska $ 50,000 tournament, Simona began her campaign with wins over Ana Vrljic of Croatia and then continued her run with an upset over Ksenia Pervak. Having advanced to the third round, she defeated Anne Schaefer, 6-0 6-0. Simona continued her run with a 6-4 7-6(6) upset over the #2 seeded Araxanta Rus to advance to the final, where she faced #1 seed Tatjana Malek but lost by 6-4 5-7 1-6.

In May she reached the quarterfinals at the Bucharest ITF $100,000 tournamant.

Also in May, at Roland Garros, she entered for the first time in a senior Grand Slam qualification MD, loosing eventually to Vitalia Diatchenko, 6-2 1-6 3-6 in Q-R48 after defeting Michaella Krajicek, 6-4 7-5 in Q-R96.

In November Simona won the $ 25,000 tournamant in Maribor.

She was as of November 2009 ranked 209th in the world [4] .

Halep received significant media coverage over her decision to have breast reduction surgery in July 2009.[5][6]
