Silvester (also spelled sylvester or sylwester) is used in some countries, including Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Slovenia and The Netherlands, as a name for New Year's Eve.

The origin of the name is that 31 December is Saint Sylvester's Day in the Roman Catholic Church,[n 1] named for Pope Sylvester I,[1] who died on that day in 335.

[edit] Notes
