Shraavana (Hindi: सावन saavan, Sanskrit: श्रावण shraavan) is a month of the Hindu calendar, also known as Sawan. In India's national civil calendar, Shraavan is the tenth month of the year, beginning on 23 July and ending on 22 August for year 2008. In lunar religious calendars, Shraavana may begin on either the new moon or the full moon around the same time of year, and is usually the tenth month of the year. In solar religious calendars, Shraavan begins with the Sun's entry into Cancer, and is usually the fourth month of the year. [edit] In popular cultureBeing the period when the Monsoon hits the over heated plains of India, the season is celebrated in various texts, such as Sanskrit text, Meghaduta by Kalidasa. Many films to have been made with Sawan in their title, like Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, (1969), Sawan Bhadon (1970), Solva Sawan (1979), Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979), Pyaasa Sawan (1980) etc. Also in Hindustani classical music, many song are theme around, Radha-Krishna during the rainy season, plus Bollywood songs, e.g., Sawan ki Ritu Aai to Sawan ka Mahina Pwan kare Shor.
