showtime movie channels is an Australian pay-TV movie service, available on the Foxtel, Optus and Austar TV platforms, the service consists of five original channels (showtime premiere, showcase, showtime action, showtime comedy, showtime drama), three HD simulcasts (showtime premiere HD, showcase HD, showtime action HD) and two timeshift channels (showtime two, showcase two). It is owned and operated by the Premium Movie Partnership (PMP), a joint venture in which Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Liberty Global have equal shares. The main competitor to Showtime is Movie Network.
[edit] HistoryShowtime started out in 1995 as part of the basic package on the now-defunct Galaxy service, showing first-run films. At the same time its sister channel named Encore was launched, showing older 'classic' movies. Until their launch in March 1995, trailers and previews were broadcast in their channel slots. Both channels were originally programmed in Burbank, California, until local operations commenced in October 1995. [2] It later became available as part of the Austar and Foxtel services when they were launched. In December 2002, the Showtime channels also became available on Optus Television. Encore was renamed Showtime Greats on 1 March 2004, with a move to more contemporary films. In September 2007 it was announced that a premium channel called Showcase would be launched on 1 December 2007 as part of the suite of Showtime channels[3]. Showcase screens movies (mainly independent, arthouse and documentary features),some comedy programs as well as a number of television series. On the 15th of November 2009, Showtime Greats was replaced by Showtime Action, Showtime Comedy and Showtime Drama. [4] In addition, Showtime was renamed to showtime premiere. Showcase (stylised as showcase) launched in early December 2007 with the Australian premieres of Dexter and Australian made series Satisfaction. It is ran by Showtime's Chief Executive Officer Peter Rose, and sister networks to the Showtime networks. Peter Rose said in 2007 that Showcase: "....provides a real home at last for quality drama in Australia, and this list of outstanding event television is just the start". It can be found on channel 403 on Foxtel and Foxtel Digital and Optus TV and Austar. On November 15 2009 Showcase will be launching two additional channels: Showcase+2 and showcase HD. Overseas Programming Many of the programs featured on Showcase are Australian premieres, and feature on cable networks in America which feature adult themes and mature issues such as HBO, Showtime and FX in America. Original Programming Showcase launched with the Australian premiere of Satisfaction, based around high class Australian escorts and their clients. The show has run for two seasons and in June 2009, production began on the third series set to air in December 2009. Showcase also aired all three series of Love My Way,a series which moved from FOX8 to W. to Showtime each season yet was rerun on Showcase all together for the first time in 2007-2008. In 2008 Foxtel and Showcase announced a new Australian drama called Tangle. Tangle is from the makers of Love My Way, and features and all star Australian cast of Matt Day, Kat Stewart, Justine Clarke, Ben Mendelsohn and Catherine McClements. The series debuted on 1 October 2009 to rave reviews: "Tangle puts Free to Air Television to shame. Australian drama desperately needs more voices that emanate from truth" [5]. Future In late September 2009, Foxtel announced that Showcase +2 will be introduced which is a timeshifted channel of Showcase. Similarly, Showcase is usually spelt in all lower case. As a matter of fact, the branding for Showtime uses the former logo from the american cable service until 1997.
