The Showaiter (Arabic: شويطر) family is a family based in the Arabian Peninsula, especially the Arab states of the Arabian Gulf. In Bahrain the family is based in Muharraq, and its name is synonymous with a traditional sweet confection produced by the family for the past 150 years. It is popular in the Arabian Gulf as "Halwa Bahraini", while in Bahrain it is commonly referred to as "Halwa Showaiter". Bahraini halwa is a direct descendant of the Omani version, introduced to the local cuisine more than 90 years ago following visits by Bahraini pearl divers and fishermen to Muscat. [edit] References
