Short-field landing is a high-performance landing for aircraft, utilizing minimum amount of runways and allowing 50-feet obstacle clearance in a close vicinity of a threshold line. Short-field landing is used when pilots need to land at an airfield which has a short runway and/or is surrounded by obstacles approximately 50 feet in height. [edit] TechniqueLight airplanes use full flaps for this approach. Pilot tends to fly a slightly higher-then usual approach glide-path, clearing the obstacles. Once obstacles are cleared, the pilot slows down to approximately 5 knots below Vg on short final and allows the airplane to "sink" into the runways, performing a nose-high flare when establishing in the ground effect. After touch-down, the apply full brakes and immediately retract flaps to allow better tire traction. [edit] References |
