Shahid Beheshti University (formerly The National University of Iran or NUI), is located in Evin & Darake District, and extends into the Velenjak District of northern Tehran, Iran on a main Campus of approximately one million square meters. The university was initially grounded as a private university for the elite of the late Pahlavi era, but was soon opened to the ordinary people as the National University of Iran, becoming one of the two best universities of Iran (the other one being the Tehran University). After the Islamic Revolution the NUI was renamed the Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), in honor of the assassinated Ayatollah Dr. Beheshti and 120 other people who were killed by a bomb of the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MKO or also MEK a communist-islamistic party that was banned from Iran due to its terroristic attempts, and is currently on the blacklist of the US Department of State). Due to an academic reform in 1986 the medical schools were separated from the main universities and became Medical Universities under the supervision of the Ministry of Healthcare and Medical Education. In 2007, the SBU signed an agreement with the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences which would unite the two Universities again cited now being uniformaly called the Shahid Beheshti University. [1] The Shahid Beheshti University is currently headed by Prof.Latifi, former head of Laser Research Institute . As of 2006, the university offers 57 Master's and 29 PhD degrees. Its main campus is located in Evin, a suburb of northern Tehran.
