This article is about the American teen magazine. For other magazines with similar names, see Seventeen (disambiguation).
Seventeen is an American magazine for teenagers. It was first published in 1944 by Walter Annenberg's Triangle Publications. News Corporation bought Triangle in 1988, and sold Seventeen to K-III Communications (later Primedia) in 1991. Primedia sold the magazine to Hearst in 2003. It is still in the forefront of newsstand popularity among growing competition. This magazine is mostly for young girls from the ages of 13-20.
[edit] ContentThe content of Seventeen includes information and advice about fashion and trends, celebrities, beauty, skincare, hair and makeup, and lifestyles. It embraces many topics inculding body image and university/college advice. It also has a useful health section about nutrition and exercise, and quizzes and horoscopes. The article length is kept deliberately brief. High quality photographs emphasize regular celebrity and clothing themes and it is well supported by advertising targeted towards the big-spending demographic of thirteen to early twenty-year-olds. Originally, it was geared towards seventeen-year-olds, (hence the name), but since then has been trying to hit a wider demographic without watering down the content. [edit] International editions
[edit] Seventeen in other media[edit] Miss SeventeenAs a promotion for the magazine, Seventeen partnered with MTV to create a reality show contest called Miss Seventeen that was broadcast from October 2005 to December 2005 on the MTV network, which only ran it for one season. Jennifer Steele was announced as the winner, and newest member of "Miss Seventeen". [edit] America's Next Top ModelThe winners of America's Next Top Model from cycles 7 onwards have each graced a cover of Seventeen magazine including Caridee English, Jaslene Gonzalez, Saleisha Stowers, Whitney Thompson, and McKey Sullivan and the winner of cycle 12 Teyona Anderson has recently appeared. The winner of the thirteenth cycle, Nicole Fox, will also grace the cover of the magazine. [edit] Dear SeventeenThe editors at Seventeen magazine write a weekly advice column called Dear Seventeen for King Features Syndicate, advising young girls who write in needing advice on topics ranging from body image to everyday awkward experiences.
