Sequenom (NASDAQ: SQNM) is a manufacturer of DNA massarrays, based in San Diego, California, United States. The MassARRAY platform is used for SNP genotyping, methylation detection and quantitative gene expression analysis. Sequenom also manufactures clinical tests, such as SEQureDx, a noninvasive prenatal test for Down Syndrome [1][2] that will become commercially available in June 2009 through Sequenom's subsidiary, SCMM (Sequenom Center for Molecule Medicine). [3] [edit] Innovations and future directionOver the course of 2008, Sequenom largely reinvented itself from a genomics instrumentation provider to a genetic diagnostics company. In June 2009, Sequenom Center for Molecular Medicine (SCMM) is expected to launch the SEQureDx prenatal screening tests for Down syndrome and Rhesus D with claims of >99% sensitivity and specificity, as well as screening for rarer Trisomy 13 and Trisomy 18. SCMM is developing a portfolio of tests on a mass spectrometer genetic analysis platform combined with Sequenom's SEQureDx technology. The combination of these technologies allows measurement of trace amounts of circulating cell-free fetal (ccff) genetic target material. On 28 September 2009, the board of directors of Sequenom fired its CEO Harry Stylli, senior vice president of research and development Elizabeth Dragon and three other employees after a probe discovered that the company had failed to adequately supervise its Down's syndrome test. CFO Paul Hawran also resigned. Board chairman Harry F. Hixson Jr. was named as the interim CEO and director Ronald M. Lindsaywas appointed to replace Dragon. [edit] References
