A Seedpod is the pod of a fruit. It is a fused case that surrounds multiple seeds. For example, the dehiscent fruit of a leguminous plant such as the pea. Fruit of the same species is considered a different variety if it has a different Pod Type. Typically a fruit develops from a gynoecium composed of fused carpels, which, upon fertilization, grow to become a silique that contains the developing seeds. After seed maturation, dehiscence takes place, and valves detach from the central septum freeing the seeds.

[edit] Legumes

Grain legumes are cultivated for their seeds, and are also called pulses. The seeds are used for human and animal consumption or for the production of oils for industrial uses. Grain legumes include beans, lentils, lupins, peas and peanuts.

All members of the legume family have five-petaled flowers in which the superior ovary ripens to form a "pod", technically called a legume, whose two sides split apart, releasing the seeds which are attached to one or both seams.

[edit] Chili peppers

Scotch bonnet and the habanero are two varieties of the same species but have different pod types. The structure of the pod gives it its name.
